Ankle Support

Shoes don't give actual ankle support. A soft bit of shoe coming slightly above your ankle isn't really going to do much other than slightly cushion you as your ankle tears itself to shreds. If you want actual ankle support, buy an ankle support. When I was getting back into riding after I did mine I wore my 661 Pro Race Ankle Brace. It's the one with the laces AND wrap-around straps, and it worked really well the entire time I used it. Nice and comfy and easy to get to the right level of support.

Yeh I was looking at the 661 supports. Do they stop you ankle going back?

I used these ankle braces extensively after blowing each ankle out separately dirt jumping and freeriding. They definitely will limit side to side and most back movement when laced up snug. The only flex remaining will allow for some general pedaling. It's quite useful to experiment with lace tension to figure out what works best for each rider/injury type. As your ankle gets stronger you can adjust to allow more movement to build flexibility and reduce tendon stiffness which is the main downside of using such a product long term.
