Scott Gibbs Posted May 11, 2011 Report Share Posted May 11, 2011 If you steerer tube is the same thickness all the way down then you'll need a LONG flat head screwdriver or metal/wood bar and a hammer and tap it all the way down and out the bottom of the steerer. And to fit the new one sit it on the top of the steerer with the bolt in the thread and tap it down gently a bit at a time till its in the same position as the old one and your done. You can either leave the old one in there and just tap it down enough to get the new one in; or you can smash it out from the bottom, you will need a decent length of bar small enough to fit through the bottom of the steerer, hit it hard enough with a big hammer and it will go. Dwarf Shortage Posted May 11, 2011 Report Share Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) It's fine if you leave it in, but if you're still up for getting it out, just smash it up inside the forks, focus on hitting the tab things and just smash away with a screwdriver or a mallet or something. Carlperkins Posted May 11, 2011 Report Share Posted May 11, 2011 yeah same problem with my echo forks, get a piece of copper plumber pipe or something and smack the hell out of the star nut, it will eventually get stuck and be all mashed, then flip the bike upside down and go in through the bottom, give it a little hell and it'll fly out with a bit of persuasion. Lynas13 Posted May 11, 2011 Report Share Posted May 11, 2011 Had a search a while ago and found that you can drill out the middle of the star nut to make it easyer to remove.
