Brakeless (Since 5 O'clock This Afternoon)

decided / had no choice but to remove my normally very reliable brakes today after the o-ring on the front brake lever piston decided to suffer from lepracy and flaked itself to pieces, leaving my entire bike covered with a generous coating of brake fluid.. left with just a rear brake i though't i'd take them both off after work today and give it try for a few days while i wait for the new parts to sort my brakes out!!

also my mum gave me her old digital camera (from about 2002 i think, its almost an antique) but i haven't got any other camera's so i though't i'd take a few pictures and a couple videos of me trying out my first brakeless stuff on my zoot (Y)

only really tried some pretty basic stuff today on the flatground its not very trials'y, but i wanted to try some brakeless manuals etc and for some reason it helped me get my 360 hops dialled in, after riding it like this i think i'm going to build a brakeless 24 zoot as a second bike it was awesome fun i can't wait to ride it tomorrow, although i am riding with a list of injuries that is even bigger than the list of parts i would need to build a second bike haha, as you can see at the end of the vid when im limping back to the camera!

anyway let me know what you think!!

(absent mindedly edited quick vid) My link

Brakeless is awesome. I took my brakes off a few weeks ago ( I tried it last year but never really got into it ) and I am haveing more fun on my bike then I have had in ages. Also I find the learning curve is quite steep once you get used too it so you feel good with yourself. I have also noticed quite a significant improvement in my balance and bike control.

thanks for the encouragement dude's (Y) .. without a doubt i will be building myself a brakeless 24 now it is so fun to ride.. not only that but brakeless manuals are one of the most satisfying tricks to accomplish!! ever!.

i've been watching mark and stan's brakeless edit's over and over again recently and still can't believe how fun they make it look even though its incredibly hard.. i'm going to keep at it though for sure... just need to get some funds together for a spare bike with exactly the same spec as this for a brakeless machine!! and i really REALLY need a decent camera too :$

That’s because they take forever to get them nailed, I've been trying them for ages on all sorts of different bikes and I can now get the balance pretty much spot on but I don’t cover anywhere near as much distance as you. Have you tried bunnyhops to manuals? Now they are hard. I must say though, you riding looks brill, love the spins (Y) and I think that’s one of the nicest Zoot’s I have ever seen.

well ever since i put the new shorter stem on it, hops and spins and all that became much easier, but i've massivley sacrificed the whole geometry of the balance point on the rear wheel  which makes manuals and literally anything involving tgs 10 times harder :giggle:

but with the hops to manuals i find it much easier if you hop to manual anything above about 2ft high, anything lower and it becomes really easy to flip off the back for some reason, but i will keep at it and get better for sure, and thanks for the comments on the riding and the bike (Y) (Y)

Nice! Keep it going, sort brakes for next bike and keep this brakeless to force you to carry on that learning curve that your on,

haha it looks like im going to have a brakeless zoot, and also a zoot with brakes much sooner than i originally planned.. 2 days after filming those few clips i noticed a fairly large fatal crack where the top right hand side seat stay joins on to the top tube (N) (N) massively dissapointed as the frame is only just 6 months old now and there is literally not a single scratch, mark, dent or anything on the entire frame as you can see from the pictures on the original post... which is thouroughly upsetting as i really enjoyed that frame it was so nice to ride, and i can't think where im going to get the money to replace it but im going to have to get myself a zoot pro for sure it just looks alot stronger, and maybe get this original zoot frame welded and build it as a brakeless beast again!!

Could you not warranty it and ask for the old frame back as well? Or buy it back for cheap?

i would love to warranty it, but apparently cracks on a 6month old totally un-abused frame are pretty normal :giggle:

onza have been incredibly helpfull to me in the past few months those guys at rocknroll are awesome and i do see where they are coming from but i jus really, really, really, really don't want't to buy a new frame after 6 months, when i was sort of expecting it to last a couple of years!!

:(

(just to add to anybody reading any of this there are absolutely no bad vibes towards onza at all, the zoot is an excellent bike and i would still recommend one to anybody)

I don't suppose you could do a spec on the bike? Or link me to one previously done?

yea sure mate no problem.. are you thinking of getting one at some point perhaps??

anyway here goes : brakeless spec..

FRAME : 2010 onza zoot with integrated seatpost removed (done this myself so i can run the seat slammed (Y) )

FORKS : standard onza zoot

STEM : hope cnc (70mm long, 25 degree rise)

BARS : standard onza zoot (used to run tensile's but got scared of them snapping)

GRIPS : trialtech foam

HEADSET : echo sl

FRONT WHEEL : standard zoot rear rim built onto zoot pro front hub and spokes with a 2.4 maxxis holy roller (i had to put a rear rim on the front as the standard width front rim was just not upto the job)

REAR WHEEL : zoot pro rim, hub and spokes also running a 2.4 maxxis holy roller

REAR SPROCKET : onza screw on 14t

FREEWHEEL : echo sl (18t)

CHAIN : trialtech Z610

BASHRING : echo urban

BOTTOM BRACKET : onza isis

CRANKS : onza pro

PEDALS : standard onza

SEAT : gusset pivotal

SEATCLAMP : tartybikes

SEATPOST : inspired pivotal

i think thats the lot anyway, hope this helps bud!

i was going to be getting some new forks, cranks, bottom bracket, pedals and a few other bits but that is going to have to wait now that my frame is on crack :(

I'd be furious if i snapped my frame after 6 months. You seem like a pretty smooth rider so i can't imagine you've abused it.

I've had my Inspired ever since they first came out and have landed on it like a shit-tonne and there's nothing wrong with it at all.

Personally i wouldn't give a single penny to Onza again, i doubt the Zoot pro is much better. If i were you i'd invest in a well made, built-to-last frame that isn't going to let you down in under 6 months. it's not exactly the first Zoot to go is it?

Cheers mate, spec looks pretty good, shame about snapping the frame though. Currently I ride a mod but I have always loved the streety style of 24's, especially brakeless as everything flows so smoothly, they look the business too. I'm sure one day I will build one of my own, hopefully sooner than later. (Y)

im overcome with fury at the moment bud just because this next load of cash was meant to be going on a few parts that ive been wanting for ages (fourplay forks etc) but now i need a new frame (N)

i was originally going to get a fourplay because i knew they were indestructible, but i wanted to run a rear disc and i wanted horizontal dropouts so i had no choice other than a zoot, and the zoot is marketed as a fit for purpose, well built, tough, street/trial frame!!

have you heard of many other zoots snapping aswell?? this is quite interesting

What a nightmare! Everyone could do without the unexpected spends like that, just when uve been inspired aswell! Makes ita need! Repaired and a new is probably the best option, ally welder anywhere on here for you?????

for sure its a nightmare i've never cracked a frame before and i've had so many bikes.. but yes luckily i do have an engineering shop up the road from where i live and they will quite happily weld it up for me for a bit of beer money (im always getting them to fix / make little bits for my motocross bike)

after its welded i will keep it as a brakeless machine but i will be a little bit intimidated when it comes to anything big on it from now just incase it fails again!

no worry's mate, its a nice spec just a few things need improving (frame obviously :giggle: )

it will probably feel quite wierd for you going from a mod to a 24 i think.. even though most of them have near enough the same wheelbase!!

It's weird... we've sold a load of Zoot complete bikes, Zoot frames and Zoot Pro framekits, and haven't had a single one back. I don't really get where this "Zoots are weak" thing comes from in all honesty. They're obviously not as strong as an Inspired, but then the price of a complete Zoot isn't a million miles off an Inspired frame only.

i spoke to stan earlier and he said exactly the same thing.. not a single one back, which is weird for sure, i really hope i was just unlucky with this one but from what i've been digging up through google searches today and a quick look on the forum.. it appears im one of many!

also i jus checked up on tarty's and i can get an inspired frame for just £45 more than a zoot frame (unless i was to go for a 2011 fourplay frame obviously) but i love the zoot's horizontal dropouts (Y)

im trying my best not to imply to anyone that "zoots are weak" at all because i will continue to use this frame after its been welded and im pretty sure i will be running a zoot pro as my main bike.. but its just kinda annoying knowing that i've had packets of crisps that have lasted longer than six months.

People must not be sending them back or something then. I appreciate that's odd, but I've seen loads of posts on here about broken zoots...

Fools, how can you get a warranty replacement without sending it back to where you got it?

Straight to manufacturer? I know most dont accept them direct, but I would imagine some people call Onza direct about warranty, get told it's not happening, and then don't bother Tarty.

mr.tattoo asked me to stick this here for the bunny to manual lark - one of his mates doing what he reckons you mean, is it? Click Here

Dunno if you'll be able to view it because it's his vid but there we go...

i had a 2010 onza zoot and it cracked at the seat stay about 2 months after i got it. i got it of a guy on this forum who had it a few months though.

anyway.. it was less than a year old but i had no warranty info, i rang onza and they offered me a half price zoot frame if i sent mine back.

but i didnt really fancy buying another and waiting for it to ping again, so just bought a 2011 echo lite, ended up selling the frame for 100 on this forum too.

long story short.. i think when they crack, most people just think.. bugger that, either sell it or bin it. i would have chucked mine in a skip if someone didnt offer me 100.

great bike, just weak in my opinion.
