Kieran Morrison
As some of you mayhave seen i have a clip holding one of my brake mounts on. Its because i have stripped that mount of threads and all the others are slowly dying. All my local bike shops said they do not do helicoiling, which they should, shouldnt they? Anyway, i have to buy my own kit to helicoil the m5 mounts. Where can i buy one, and how much would it cost roughly? Kieran.
Sam T
link Edit: Ebay is your best bet. This looks very good, comes with 25 inserts aswell! Might have to grab myself one.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-127589-0-8-Thread-Repair/dp/B001C7QYB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=diy&qid=1304005172&sr=8-1 Edited April 28, 2011 by Sam T
forteh
Not all bike shops will have a helicoil kit and is more in the remit of an engineering workshop. I got a helicoil kit for one of my motorbikes (some crankcase cover threads had failed) and paid about 17 quid for an M6 kit with 20 inserts from my local bearing/tool supplier; came with everything bar a tap wrench but I had one anyways. The kit should come with full instructions but you should still have some basic knowledge for tapping threads etc, a quick google should give you some pointers though if youre unsure
dave33
Best off avoid helicoils on stuff like brake mounts, better off with a TIMESERT, try eBay
rab shropshire
do timeserts not have a flange at the top wich would need fileing of to get your brake clamps square EDIT: just had a search Helicoil kit = £16 Timesert kit = £80 Helicoil for the win Edited April 28, 2011 by rab shropshire
ForrestDump
A local car garage may have a helicoil kit, could see if they do before you splash out your cash.
Matthew_Gibson
Helicoil are good, but you may have to use a bigger size bolt, so youll have to alter the brake clamps etc, with the time cert you wont, if you dont need your frame for a week, ship it my way and ill timecert it for you. have a set at work, that goes up to mega size, so should have m5 in there
AdamR28
Helicoil are good, but you may have to use a bigger size bolt Nah, that's the whole point of the helicoil, it goes back to M5 thread. Time serts look bombproof, however is there enough meat in the brake mounts? Plus, if you are ripping a helicoil out, you are seriously doing it wrong! Matthew_Gibson
ah my bad, must just have been my old frame to start with, 3 of the 4 were m6, but some how Luke got them sorted, not sure how.
Kieran Morrison
A local car garage may have a helicoil kit, could see if they do before you splash out your cash. Alpine bikes sent my mum to a shop called prestige or something, they were going to charge £5 per bolt and i ould get them all done, £40 PER HOUR and thats NOt including VAT. Sam, those look like the things i want, would they work to helicoil my Maggy mounts?
forteh
Plus, if you are ripping a helicoil out, you are seriously doing it wrong! To be fair, you're doing it wrong if you strip the original threads! I'm pretty sure you could get a timesert to fit but given the application I don't know if out will give any huge benefits.
