JD™
Pffft, patriotism is a bore and typically causes more problems than it does help anything. I wouldn't have said anything but, due to your obvious attachment to it all, the idea of potentially winding you up a bit is amusing right now, JD Enjoy! Religion, Spirituality, Yawn. Max Quinn
Actually appalled at how few people went in on this thread for the right reasons. St George is the patron saint of England. Yesterday was about celebrating the beauty and the triumph that is England. The fact that so few did just makes the reasons for those that didn't a self fulfilling prophecy - "England is shit so we don't celebrate it", if you celebrated it it wouldn't be so shit. f**ksuckers. Perhaps Trials Forum isn't actually that high on everyone's list of 'places to go to celebrate'

It'd be more of a triumph if people stopped talking like that and believed in it. Then again the country is full of people who are far too involved in complaining about how much of a 'state' the country is in to do anything about it. I bet you had a Guinness on Paddys day? It's fun to celebrate a country that's done f**k all for anyone, f**k celebrating a country that's done everything for everyone and then let them all call it home and suck it dry. No one really cares about some random day celebrating nothing named after some guy who's known for slaying non existent creatures. Not to mention all the religious stuff on top of that. No one celebrates Ireland on St. Patrick's day, it's just an excuse to go out and drink the highest caloric alcoholic beverage. I'm sure people celebrate pride in their country in their own way and not be compelled to celebrate it just 1 day out of the year because we're told to. Like at the world/euro cups and other sporting events. Having surface deep non-criticizing pride in ones country doesn't mean anything, and has no beneficial effect on their Country. Just look at the USA.
bikeperson45
The reason that we hold this annual event is that St George is the patron saint of Scouting. Like Scouting, St George supports people of all backgrounds across the world. Not only is he the patron saint of Scouting, but also for England, Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; and of Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark). He's also the patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis. And of course, he’s a dab hand at dispatching dragons! Edited April 24, 2011 by bikeperson45
Ali C
I wondered why there were more England flags out than normal....now I know.
isitafox
I think it took a backseat as it's the Easter weekend so everyone's more bothered about exchanging chocolate eggs and panic buying at the supermarkets as god forbid they'll be shut for 1 whole day! Fish-Finger-er
been away for a few days. but my 2 cents on it all. National pride isnt a temporary thing that we should celebrate one day a year, or until the quarter finals of every world cup.I always thought of it being something about being proud of your heritage, or where your from, not an excuse to wear a daft T shirt and suddenly start being a fan of cricket because weve just got good at it. JD™
This thread went well... To clarify, I'm patriotic all the time. I'm very proud of being English, whatever peoples thoughts are there, but it's obvious that you're more vocal about it on a day dedicated to such a thing. Each to their own and all that. Ali C
I like the country, I don't like the drinking yobbo culture that lives in just about every town.

Luke Dunstan
Why does Cornwall get its own flag? And it's own language, It's basically a straight version of Wales.
JD™
And it's own language, It's basically a haven for a race of 'slightly different people' (when you're describing them politely ). I joke, I should get a pic of all the flag we have in the Croydon gym - the place is covered in all sort of them. Cornwall being one.
