Bike Weight (26)

whats the average weight for a decent (comp worthy) 26 inch trials bike these days??

i wouldnt say my bike was heavy compared to a standard bike but compared to a nice spec trials bike i fear it is.

Unfortuanatly you will now ask so how heavy is it??? lol well right now i dont know but i will weigh it soon. I ask about weight so i can compare it to the average.

My main problem is i always choose strength over weight when chosing parts in the past. now my riding is getting smoother i feel i can compromise... as i think weight is starting to hold me back a little bit.

list of major parts is as follows....

Onza Limey 3 frame

* Onza Fall guy Forks (i snapped 2 sets of alloys doing front hops and got these complimentary) lol

* Sun mammoth fat rims (Front and back)(i think they were made for downhill lol)

Hope pro 2 in the back

* 24/7 Dark angel 3 piece steel forged cranks (heavy lol)

tyres try all sticky

stem trial tech - bars onza flat carbon finish

*drive train (single speed with old dmr bashguard)

hs33 maguras front and back.

the parts with * next to them are the ones i fear are heavier than average.

ill report back later with a weight. It funny though with me because although i want a lighter bike i just dont feel safe no matter how smoothly i ride on anything less than my dark angel cranks lol If i had a sponsorship deal that included free part replacments i might not be so worried lol

My bike is 9.1kg with a pretty much bombproof spec apart from perhaps the forks (BT f6 - a bit flexy but Im not harsh on forks so no worries). The frame is reasonably lightweight 1590g (was featherweight back in '06 when it was made!), some sensible choices for parts and it can get pretty light - Ive not modified my bike at all (hole drilling etc) to save weight apart from machining the cloud9 bash down into a single side UCI.

Look at getting some trialtechs, expensive but should last a good while, certainly alot of people that are harsh on the front end rely on them. For the cranks, invest in some middleburns, not only are they the lightest cranks going, theyre also warranted for trials use so if you do snap them you can get a replacement free/cheap :)

I think the official weight (added up from all the weights on tartybikes) for mine is about 9.2kg but I've weighed it around 9.9ish. That's with mostly middle of the road stuff as well. I used the sun bfm's when I first started about 11 years ago, still got them built on some stx-rc hubs at my dads house!

yeah they have a plastic area where the nipples attach lol

their a pain in the arse with the limey frame though as they are only 29mm and i have to overfill my maguras for them to work properly lol cant buy a fatter rim though without replacing cranks as my dark angels are realy strait and make contact with the magura cylinders on the back if i move them out to fit a wide rim lol bodge bodge bodge for me lol

Nearly forgot about my bike weight.

turns out my bike is about 12.5kg

i weighed it on some fishing hanging scales lol

Im actually surrised considering the parts list.....

COnsidering 10kg is considered about average im not that worried now about getting lighter parts until these eventually break. Im not comp riding at the mo so im not worried about being at a disadvantage but if i do start i may just buy myself a complete 20inch.

P.s just have to work on my technique and a little bit of power/strength ;)

When I did comps, the lightest I ever had my bike was 9.8kg I think.

I go for reliability over weight saving, I don't like having things flex and take away from the precision, I like to have grippy tyres that have the most grip and decent puncture protection as there is no point having a light bike and then not being able to do anything due to the tyres not gripping, bouncing you off rocks and getting punctures.

Right now my street bike weighs around 11kg and that seems plenty light enough.
