gu trials
anybody have any idea why footballers are paid so much when all they are doing is their hobby just like us and bike trials but there isnt much money involved in our sport? apart from it is more popular than our sport lol
ogre
because football drives pubs, tv and broadcasting it's prety big business, theres enough money in football, so why shouldn't they? who'd say no to a 6+ figure salary...
Jake Beach
Guess its because it is good entertainment and they are the best players and play really well. And becuase of the popularity of the sport?

And becuase of the popularity of the sport? but if bike trials was a more popular sport then i guess the best riders wouldn't be on as much money as they are, maybe if people paid to see the comps and the organizers of comps gave the competitors a bit of money then this would be a start
MikeCottTrials
Because people are willing to pay to see them is the bottom line. If nobody paid to see them i.e. like trials then there would be no large salaries
Kieran Morrison
Everyone that says because its entertainment, what would you rather; watch a game of football or have your lives saved? Soldiers on average get paid £23000 a year i think, rooney is getting 250 000 per week and some footballers get paid even more. Anybody being paid that much is ridiculous, unless they are a president/prime minister etc. Soldiers is jsut an example, doctors (even though they get paid quite a bit), nurses etc. also save lives and dont get enough Edited April 16, 2011 by Kieran Morrison
matt.price
because there is so much money in football. even if trials was more popular we wouldn't have t-shirts saying "hermance" and belaey" on. unlike football where alot of money come from merch. nb88
Well yeah of course doctors etc. 'should' get paid more but footballers aren't paid by the government. Its a business, and footballers are what millions of people pay to watch, and so obviously the footballers themselves get paid a hell of a lot. It might seem unfair but in a way they get what they deserve, since so many people want to watch them kick a football around a field I'm more p**sed off about bankers getting paid so much after the government bailed them out.......! gu trials
also footballers "arn't" on enouth money as it is from playing football, so they get more money from designing products such as aftershave ect, then they get more money for doing adverts and more money again just from being who they are, and having their name on shirts for the public to buy. thats what pisses me of lol

Footballers don't design products such as aftershave 2. They're good businessmen if they get endorsements and sponsorship deals. Once you get a name for yourself, you become a brand that sells. The more you get te brand out there, the more it becomes known and therefore worth more, the more people who want you to endorse their products to get tem to sell. This goes round in a circle. Revolver
A football team wants a good team, they pay for a player. They want to have him more than another team, they pay more money than that team.

Anybody being paid that much is ridiculous, unless they are a president/prime minister etc. Jog on, same can be said about any other profession, or sport. The fact of that matter is+ anyone who has no health problems can be a solider, simples. 1 in a 5 million serious footballers will make a 6 figure wage, and it ruins so many lives. i.e. my mate was in the West Ham academy, got signed for Ipswitch, the training took him out of school, lost him mates, and he didn't make it, hes now playing for some shit team for a token salary and the same can be said about thousands of other people. So if they dedicate their lives to it, and are good enough and lucky enough to make it big then fair play. Don't be sour about it.

Revolver
Yeah, pretty much. Then you add in all the other stuff - people like to bet on it, people like to watch it, people want the players to wear their logos so you want to buy their shit, people want to video it, people want their logos on the video so you want to buy their shit, all that crap, you end up with football as it is. Luke Rainbird
Say you had £1000 in the bank that you'd been given for working X job for Y amount of time. Just because you could afford it, would you refuse a free ice cream?
yoyoyo
Of the £100,000 for Gerrard that was mentioned earlier, 50% (£50,000) goes to the government in tax. Thats 2 soldiers salary every week. 104 over the year. There's probably about 30 players on that wage, probably more. Thats 3,104 soldiers a year from the premier league. Everyone knows a lot of drink is bought when football games are on, thats 20%(VAT) plus whatever duty there is on alcohol now, per drink bought. Lets just say 27% overal goes to the government per pint. £3 a pint = 81p per pint. I'm guessing well over a million are drunk over the weekend tv games. Thats £810,000 for one weekend. Just to put in perspective, when England didn't qualify for Euro 2008, they estimated the economy would lose out on £2 billion. So really i have no problem with what they earn. Yes soldiers should get more, but it'd come out of taxes(which everyone already complains are too high), and to be fair they chose to get shot at for that money. They know what they're getting into. LukasMcNeal
You say alot goes to taxes but I bet half of them have accounts abroad or in tax heavens so they pay very little at all. Just look at other sports like F1 where most the drivers do the same.
matt.price
the money that sponsors invest in clubs, they don't have to pay in taxes.
