Lives Of The Most Excellent Trials Riders

Hi all,

Right this is a project that I have wanted to do for a while and it has been forming in my mind for a good while now.

I want to create a biographical video of the most Excellent Trials Riders in the UK at the moment. The format borrows from the 16th century art historian Vasari's methods of a biographical model presenting artists skills in the Renaissance. But where he had artist, I have riders. And where he had a pen and paper, I have a DVX100B video camera :)

Generally the idea is to document the lives of riders; short interviews, riding at their familiar local spots/ the spots that are important to them and where they train etc... I don't want the video to become a spectacle (it seems trials videos are going that way more and more these days). I know a lot of the time when I used to ride I would be alone, riding for hours and hours, pretty content in one place maneuvering my way through the landscape, whether urban or natural just for the fun of it. This is the kind of stuff I want to capture, that evolving interaction between riders and environment.

But anyway, if anyone could suggest riders about at the moment who are indeed miraculous in the art of trials then please suggest away bellow. What riders should be a priority? Even better if you are a miraculous rider and are interested in being a part of this project then please contact me, possibly even send me a video to show me your skills.

I should mention that I don't intend to make any profit off this video in any way, shape or form. My motivation just comes from the love of the sport. However if anyone can suggest any ways of getting funding that would be great as there will be a lot of driving around involved, video tapes used and missed days of work.

I want to get filming underway after the 5th of May....

Thanks and hope to here from you most Excellent Trials Riders!

Kevin

One rider in, most excellent!

I don't think it would be complete without Ashton to be honest. Will have to deffo try and rope him into it somehow! Mr Johns would also be ideal for this! For now interested parties send me your names, video links and location to the below email with the following title "Trials video" (so if any gets sent to my junk I'll know):

on-one-2@hotmail.com

Hopefully we can get something rolling fairly soon. Forgive me if I don't respond to your emails for a couple of weeks I'm chockablock with other work at the moment. After the 5th of May however I'm very free so I'll start responding and shifting through the emails! Should be an awesome project for 2011... Could you also link this post to riders whom you consider excellent uk riders. I should specify they don't have to be of UK origin, as long as they live in the UK (more for travel reasons) thats fine.

Cheers chaps

Kev

Martin Hawyes. Martin ashtons partner in crime. Trialskings if you can find them. Hans rey? Glasseye trial riders. Be interesting if you actually pull this off. Be good to get some manufacturers in there too. Middleburn/ hope/ onza/ curtis/ leeson/ planet x. Suppose I'm digging up the past with most of this.

So how can you push your limits while doing a demo at the risk of crashing and making a fool of yourself?

I guess you would do it while out riding, when not demo-ing. A bit like comps, if you push your limits and crash you make a fool of yourself and get a 5.

I think the video would be best with a good mix of riders - people who just do it for fun, plus those who take it seriously; both for a living and for competitions.

Yes Adam now we are getting some where!

So why not a mix of how different styles of riders go about things!

So if I'm narrow minded what does trials mean ? As in where does the definition of the word trials end?

The people that really changed trials (in vague chronological order)

Hans Rey

The Marti(y)ns

Ryan Leech (He's surely unemployed now?)

Chris Akrigg

Trialskings

TRA

Coustellier Brothers + Vincent Hermance

Craig Lee Scott

Damon Watson

Danny Mac

Obviously a lot of those are foreigners but there are plenty of people on that list who you could talk to.

Actually someone should compile a history of trials and the internet, as played out by youtube videos. Would be pretty interesting.

Yea he would be a good choice but I think with all his demos and other commitments would he have the time?

How are you gona get it filmed? Are the riders ment to film there self or get some one to film or are you personally going to film ?

I'm going to film it myself for various reason...

1. I want all the footage to be shot on one/two camera's so there is a continuity to the whole thing (although I am going to shoot some real film on super 8 for the intros).

2. I have specific questions I want to ask each rider in interviews.

3. Generally I want to explore the historical side to bike trials as well (had some experience with historical inquiry). However this last point might be a little difficult as I think trials developed outside of the UK to begin with. Without direct access to certain riders like Ot Pi this might be a little difficult, but I'll see how it goes... I need to do some exploring on this point. I definitely think somebody should be tracking the development of trials however. Most activities have a detailed written account of their past. There is no reason why trials shouldn't.

Are you intending to focus on riders alone or would you consider including interviews with people who are directly involved with Trials without being just* another rider?

For example it could be interesting to include interviews with companies that have pushed the sport (Pace, Hope, Pashley & leeson all spring to mind).

*Troll comment, I don't mean anything by it.
