Is It Worth Buying Cheap Or Not?

Well, as my friend has managed to salvage what's left of his trials bike, apart from the brakes, it's made me want to get my trials bike sorted out (just needs a new freewheel).

Now I finally have somebody to ride with.

And looking on Tarty, the cheapest one is £39, but I know Tarty products are good.

But on eBay the cheapest I found was £6.99.

What do people think of the cheaper options?

Just for messing around on, bare in mind I'm a total novice.

Or is it worth waiting until I have some spare cash, and buying the more expensive one?

Freewheel?

Get a good one, not a shit one.

The old saying is, buy cheap buy twice. In this case, you might additionally have to pay for extra replacement teeth too.

Yeah I live by the rule of "If you buy cheap you buy twice"...

But I didn't know if someone had bought a cheaper one and it had lasted well.

I seem to have really bad luck with my freewheels braking, so I don't want to spend 40-50, and it just brake again in a month

That's your problem right there. You'll realise eventually that if you'd invested in a decent product to start with and look after it, it will last a hell of a lot longer and do the job intended a lot better!

Not really, I have had fairly decent ones before, and they still brake, I don't know if its my riding style or whatever, or maybe just because I'm still getting the hang of the basics or what.

But they seem to brake fairly easy

Agree with Jeff completely - there's a few areas you should never cut costs with, the hub/ freewheel probably being the most important. You need to be able to trust it completely and for it not to let you down no matter what level you're at!

EDIT: i wrote that then forgot about it before posting it. 7 replies later... :$

long story short, echo renamed their range. the titanium one is the echo SL, and the steel one is the TR. Tarty havnt updated this :P

The TR had less engagement points though, and before it came out everyone got told it was a "titanium version of the SL" Or something along those lines.

So long story short, tarty aren't going to make you pay the price of an SL for a TR.

Because it will seriously confuse everyone!

Exactly.

I guess I shall pay the extra for one then, and hope it doesn't break

Do Tarty accept PayPal by the way?

It's my only means of paying...

Edit: Just to add, I sent you an E-Mail regarding a rear wheel build Adam, did you receive it?

Yep, it's integrated into the site.

I'll have a look when I'm at work (Y) Depending on how many emails we have it may take a day or two to get back to you, fastest way to get a reply is by phone :)

OK good.

I don't mind waiting a while, I just have a lot of problems with E-Mails so didn't know if you got it or not.

And I don't like to phone when it's just a few simple questions, I feel like I'm pestering

To answer your original question, its never worth buying cheap.

When i first started trials on an old tbird, i used a bmx freewheel, and snapped them every 2 weeks.

A freewheel which slips will always make u less confident with your bike.

Ive never had my echo sl slip (and i bet everyone who's had one, will agree with me).

i wouldnt buy any other freewheel :) Woth every penny of the £60
