Gaz96
Time to buy some tyres for my bike, i will be riding street on a 24inch and was looking at the choices, Maxxis Holy Roller is very popular I see and was also looking at the DMR Moto RT, for some reason I really like the look of the Moto RT and I have read alot of good reviews about it but does it live up to the standards of the Holy Roller? Was also thinking about sizes, I know i'm going to have a 2.4 on the back but what iis ideal for up front?
Ali C
I would say stick with the same size front and rear for streety riding, having a narrower front tyre makes the bike feel weird when carving corners and stuff. The Holy Rollers are very good, good grip, good feel etc, can't go wrong really, HOWEVER, the best tyres I have tried are the Odyssey Mike Aitken P-Lyte tyres My link They are a bit narrower than the Holy Rollers, but nothing ridiculous and they are fairly heavy (over 900g I think) but the "feel" is the best I have ever felt, it's like they have lots of damping and stability, you can run them softer but they feel harder. It's hard to explain. With normal tyres running at 40psi, they feel like they will rim out and have a lot of vibrations though them which reduces grip and makes them feel like they will wash out. The P-Lytes don't have re-enforced sidewalls as such, but they don't feel like they will pinch as easily, at 40 psi they feel more like 50-60 with the "thumb" test but once on the bike they feel like all the vibrations are damped and it feels totally confident in the corners and more forgiving on the body. shame they don't do a 26" version. SamKidney
my Moto RTs on my street bike are terrible. That's being kind. They are a hardish compoud, so last ages. And roll fast too. But that's the end of the good points for me. They feel unstable, they puncture easily and have thin sidewalls. They have almost no grip either. When travelling fast, if you so much as dare attempt a corner the front end will slide out from underneath you, leaving a nice red cut on your hands and chin as you slide across the floor. They also crack and split as they age, and do so quickly. You can probably tell I'm not a massive fan of these tyres
Scott Gibbs
Maxxis all the way. Best street tire i've used, i personally dont think the moto rt's are that bad but certainly not as good as the holyroller. Also the schwalbe crazy bob is a nice grippy solid tire but is quite heavy. Miles Mallinson
Been using Holy rollers for a bit they feel good, would really recommend them for street but they are pretty grippy on rocks and logs. Used to ride Dmr Moto diggers and rt's, the diggers were good though they didn't roll aswell as the RT's or Holy Rollers. RT's are alright if you ride in dry conditions all the time but on wet stuff they are pretty crap, my friend has a pair and he washed out in the middle of the road so I'd steer well clear of them. I would like to try the Schwalbe Table Tops they look alright. Edited March 31, 2011 by Milo123
TrialsMan Dan
Got a 2.4 Holyroller on the back and a 2.2 Moto RT on the front of mine, only went for a narrower front tyre to keep the weight low on the front, the Mto RT is a good tyre, pretty light and rolls well but does have its limits when cornering. Gonna try my 2.3 kenda k rad on the front again despite it being heavier. 2.4 Holy roller on the back is good, really grippy but rolls well too and seems to resist punctures well but i have the tyre pressure higher than normal because the hooly roller feels a bit squidgey when hopping.
