  1. 1. Which one do you prefer in front in stock bike

    • Avid bb7 (cheap, simple, easy to fix, some modulation, good enought?)
    • Hope mono trial 180. (expensive, complicated to fix, but sure, a lot of people use it and for 180 I need adaptor)
    • Hs33. (cheap, simple, same brake rear, but without modulation)
    • Hope tech (no widely used in trial, complicated, but postmount and "new" and lots of possibilities of adjustment, in this case i think that i can use my magura adaptor)
    • Vee ( is not my main option but you can vote it.)

Hello all.

Maybe this poll have been done before because is quite normal question when you think to change your front brake. But I didn't find it using the searcher. If this poll is re-post please, apologise.

The thing is that nowadays I have a magura louise 180 with some problems in brake lever and with some problems during his "life". I'm up to here about this brake.

Now I'm thinking to change my brake and I want a "sure option".

I'm conscious about it's all about your personal style of ridding, mainly between disk brake or wheel brake. But now I'm open to a change my style of riding.

Vee is not the main option because I have to get and adaptor for my fork. And in general, wheel brake is not my option because I think that is quite aggressive for me, although like I said, I'm open to new options

Please, when you vote give the reasons about your choice.

Thanks a lot.

I've voted for HS33, I used to run Hope mono trials on both my mod and stock and tried both in 160 and 180 but found neither delivered enough power for me. This could be down to my technique and me not throwing my weight enough forward on certain things but I like the security factor if a HS33, until my forks brake!

I cant stand any kind of rim brake on the front (mainly due to noise).

I agree with that Nick, feel like a right peenarse if I'm trying to slow down going down a hill and there's people about. Would sooner jump off or drag my feet on the road, or walk!!

Im running the mono trial carbon/ti with a 180 rotor and love it

In stock bike?

And, do you need an adaptor for 180?

You should be and aggressive rider!!(Y)

You think that hope with 180 wasn't enough for you?? Maybe for me too..

Regarding the annoying sound of hs33, I really love it...

Ermm how can I put this

VEEE BRRAAKE

Despite using some swiss cheese tektro arms I got off a chav bike I bought for a tenner, and a wilko cable,

my V is epic (IMO obviously).

The secret being inspired Phats and SD7 lever.

It's so good that it cracked my because forks >_<

The scary thing is that with stiff forks and arms it could be twice as good, not forgeting the grind and brake booster i don't have

Obviously a brake this good with no modulation is not practical around town, the main reason I stuck with BB7, But who said riding a bike that is slow, has no seat and loud brakes was practical anyway???

I personally run a 200mm mono trial up front (on a stock)and its fine, but it doesn't feel over powered or anything. My 185mm Avid (silver calipers) were similar power, but I kept snapping calipers so got a Hope.

Aha! Ok, maybe you had a yaabaa 1499 with front hope? could be? I don't know why I remember this bike in bike pictures and I relate it to your nick...

Then your option is Hope, ok, some people here in Spain comment me that with Avid your finger gets tired much faster during riddíng than with hope, this is true?

Thanks!!

Running a front 180mm mono trial and feels spot on. No adaptors, you just need to get the correct calliper.

Perfect!!

This is what I want to know, then exist a different callipers for 160 or 180.

Your post helps me a lot, thanks!!

AHAHA! The main problem is not the practicality of the brakes, the main problem for wheel brakes for me is that for moments that you need some modulation, mainly practising natural trial, a front wheel brake could be a problem or even dangerous (IMO).

Could be that wheel brake is more suitable for pure street trials?

hope tech trial 180, might have an almost new one for sale in the next few days, no.3 caliper so no adapter needed.

AJ

You sale it? Right or left hand?

But maybe the courier to Spain is too expensive.. :(

  • 1 month later...

Just re-fish this to give and advise for all others that have the same problem.

I bought a hope mono trial with "large" calliper and 180 disk rotor.

When I mounted all in the bike I realised that the calliper only bite half of rotor..

Problem, my fork have a 20+ mount, then the large calliper for 180mm... Result: 200mm.

Stupidly I thought that all mounts were +0mm and didn't realise that mine was larger..

Now I have to change the calliper to small one to fit 180mm rotor.

My fork is the OEM of yaabaa 1499, I think that only this and Trialtech fork have this +20 mount too, but in general other forks are +0.. Is this true?

I really prefer, for stock bikes, +20 mounts IMO

I hope this helps others to avoid problems.

Or buy a 203mm rotor?

Nice idea! but 205 mm are to much pan for me.

And I prefer Hope mono trial 180mm brake rotor than other in 205.

Moreover, if I will try to sell front brake in the future, the small calliper are widely used. At least in Spain, then I will sell it faster...

Thanks!!

The selection have been done.

Final selection is Hope mono trial with 180 hope mono brake rotor, plastic hose and caliper number 5

I have to do the running in because it's completely new, but seems that work quite fine..
