Two Finger Braking

Hi everyone, just out of interest, does anyone else find it easier to use 2 fingers on the brakes rather than 1?

I can see the advanctage of 1 but I just cannot get used to it and find it very difficult to get the same amount of strength when using 1.

Does anyone know if this will hamper my progression with more difficult trials moves or if it is just down to personal preference and makes no difference at all.

Thanks in advance

Chris

learn to ride with only one finger on the brake and then it is easyier to pedal hop

Cool thanks for the help, its pedal hopping that is giving me most problems learning so I might just try setting up the rear brake for 1 finger for the time being...it just feels odd, after years of riding downhill and XC (and dabbling in trials) with 2 fingers it feels so un-natural!

If you're the kind of person who can bend their fingers right back without pain / breaking them, then I can see that it could work for you. I personally have pretty poor flexibility in my fingers, and even hopping on the back wheel would be near impossible with 2 fingers on the lever.

No not particularly flexible but I just don't feel like my fingers are strong enough to hold the brake/pull it to lock ut up with 1 finger...basically it comes down to the confidence and feeling stronger using 2 fingers...maybe I need to review my brake set up?

I would put it down to you not having confidence in your brake set up, can't remember the last time I had to use 2 fingers whilst riding my MTB, probably back when I had vee brakes and it was wet. Decent brake set up will fill you with confidence. I know when I don't trust my rear brake I just can't ride to my full abilities, it holds you back.

thats alright set your brake up how you think it feels best and just practice on a curb or something small using one finger.

I had this when I was first learning pedal kicks. I found a couple of things helped, the main was getting some brakes that I felt confident would hold me. What I feel is important to say is, the better you get, the worse the brakes you can use, so once you learn to kick onto the back wheel smoothly you tend to find that you will often put the brake on once you have actually stopped rather than to stop you. What you have to realise is that on small stuff if you require a powerful brake then you are doing it wrong.

basically keep practicing and you will start to see that you actually only need one finger.

I spent the first 3 years of riding trials using two fingers on my brakes. I ended up buying some RB levers (only room for one finger) to force me to use one. it's definitely beneficial to try and get used to one finger braking.

Good to know that it clearly didn't hamper you Ali!

I wouldn't say 2 fingers resricts you in anyway really.

obviously you will have less grip on the bars, I use two fingers on front brake and 1 on rear brake. But I know a few lads who use two fingers on each maggie'
