rto1
Got a 24" Inspired Fourplay and want to try gearing it up a bit higher. Right now it has a Trialtech 16t freewheel in back and a Surly 22t front cog. What I'd like to do it put on a smaller freewheel but I can't find any freewheels that fit the rear hub that are smaller than the 16t. If they don't exist then maybe I guess I'd like to experiment with a larger front cog but I can't seem to find anything larger than the 22t... WTF... Anybody got any ideas ? Switch to front freewheel (FFW) it will improve engagement and balance the weight out.
Luke Rainbird
What cranks are you running? The simplest option will be to throw on a slightly larger chainring, though 22:16 is a fairly 'normal' ratio. If you're finding it too light then a 23/24t ring would probably sort you out though for minimal outlay. You'll struggle to find a decent freewheel smaller than 16t. Switch to front freewheel (FFW) it will improve engagement and balance the weight out. Sweet work on not answering the question Weight aside, a FFW would allow you to get hold of a smaller rear sprocket (go for an 18:13/18:12 setup or so) which is what he is actually after, though running a freewheel on the rear will give you an effective higher number of engagement points than on the front. My bad, haha I forgot the question half way through typing it.
Revolver
I wouldn't use a FFW on a rolly bike like an inspired. Get yourself a hope pro IIt and use 22-15 or something.
craigjames
My bad, haha I forgot the question half way through typing it. Even then you got half of what you were saying wrong! Switching to a rear free hub would be ideal, what cranks are you running at the mo, i'm guessing they're screw on type? Think 18:13 would be the best option, I ran it on my 24" and it felt lovely. Didn't inspired used to do a 23T ring and bash set up?
multi tasking male
im running 18-14 i absoluely love it i know its already been said but a free hub (pro 2) would give you alot more options with your gear choice but its quit alot of money and yeah, inspired do a 23t chain ring and bash but its screw on i think, not sure though, double check with someone or simply have a look on tarty bikes chris Edited March 14, 2011 by multi tasking male
Miles Mallinson
I used to ride a FFW 18t-14t it felt alright but I didn't really like it how the chain is turning when freewheeling, now i run the screw on trialtech 23t sprocket and 18t freewheel that feels alot better even though its easier it just feels more solid because of not have the freewheel up front, 22t-16t or 17t is good for riding 24.
