OAP
Owdo. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this. I've just put my back wheel back on, set the snailcams and tightened the wheel back up. But when I turn the cranks the chain slackens slightly, then tightens up again? this action coincides with a slight clunking noise from the rear sprocket. I've checked the alignment and it seems to be ok. Does anybody have any idea what could be going on?? Cheers Stu.
isitafox
Is the sprocket old and worn down? Or has the chain been hit and squashed together slightly so its catching?
multi tasking male
all chains have it i think its usually on the drive spot, put the cranks flat with the pedal you face forward when you ride facing forward and then that should be the slacker spot. its just from where you use that foot when you pedal hop and put more force through the chain so it stretches it that spot. If it isnt this then i dont know what it is listen from about 40 seconds in http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/media/guides/maintenance_snail_cam_setup/m5.html chris Edited March 6, 2011 by multi tasking male
OAP
Cheers guys Those are both helpful points. I didn't know that about chains having an area of greater stretch!! I knew they stretched, but i suppose to be stretched more where you repeatedly exert most force makes sense. I think I have fettled it, I had may chain too tight, something i am prone to doing when i reset my wheel, because I'm putting my attention into getting my tyre to miss the frame. Which is by a whisker!! So the effect was emphasised.... I think Seems ok now anyway. Thanks again. Stu.
