  1. 1. What side do you have your rear break lever?

Recommended Posts

I'm just see'in what people would prefer.

I was just wondering because i have my back break lever on the left, but i have noticed on some of the video's i have been watching that some people run there back break on the opposite side to me.

Is there an advantage to this?

Happy voting,

Cheers.

Kidson.

it has nothing to do whit whis side is best, it is just because that in uk people have their rear brake on the left and in other part of the world people have it to their right, just like that in uk car's is driving on the left side on the road and in the rest of the world the drive on the right side of the road. :turned:

It's mainly a location thing, Like which side of the car the steering wheel is on.

In the UK we mainly have the rear brake lever on the left side but in other countries they run it on the right side. There is no pros and cons to it, just like there is no pros and cons to left/right foot forward.

I do personally have the rear brake on the right side on my commuter bike though. This is because the levers and gear shifters are all in one, and because i wanted rear mech only (which is on the right shifter) and rear brake only i just kept it all together for less clutter.

If your right handed it has the advantage of having quicker response and greater strength, IMO, but that is not why I have mine on the right.

I'm right handed and run my rear brake on left. My only reason for this is that whilst learning to ride a bike and riding bikes up till now, my rear brake has always been on the left. So though I am right handed, if I was to swap my brakes around, I would find it extremely unnatural to ride like that, whether it be general cycling or trials riding.

So as everyone else has said, the UK and maybe 1 or 2 other countries run their brake the same way as us, but the rest of the world run the the opposite way round. I have no idea why they do, but they do.

I thought it was something to do with what side of the road people drive on. In Britian we're on the left so when you're making a right turn (more difficult/dangerous) it's better to be able to use the back brake when indicating because then you won't go over the bars.

Or something like that...

When I started riding I played about with the brake set up switching the levers round just to see what it would feel like, and since then I’ve been riding with my right lever as the back brake, so in my case it’s just down to personal preference with what set up I went with.

I know slot of people who do BMX who have it the right.

This IS because a large amount of people are right handed, and find it generally easier for them to have it on the right as they have no front brake and feels better for them.

Actually, its supposedly to do with the way you turn down, as if you had a left hand brake, and twisted the bars to the left when you turndown, some people who were retarded got the lever stuck in there ass pocket, so they changed it to the right hand lever. thats what i was told anyway...

I'd imagine for the BMX side of things, as well as turn-downs it's probably because a lot of people were trying to copy that American look? If you've ridden a bike for any length of time at all with a traditional UK brake setup then I don't think the whole 'stronger right arm' thing would really have anything to do with it as you'd have developed the specific muscles for that operation far more than just having a supposedly stronger overall arm or anything like that.

Sure people can squeeze harder with their right hand? I wouldn't change it on a bmx, but I can see why people do. . . .I can squeeze harder with my right hand (i'm right handed) so it makes sense.
