Miles Mallinson
Don't you mean you don't need a back brake for backwards manuals? But I suppose its just alot easier to practise them with brakes then take them off once I've got them. In fact i think using a rear brake would make things harder. Also I am not sure how fakie manuals are gonna help you get off anything higher than about 1' if you cant already clear the distance. Miles Mallinson
I just thought for correcting your height on the back wheel, (I replied to your comment on pinkbike by the way)
Revolver
I used to suck at 180s until I decided, 'I'll take my brake off my bmx, I always pull it and ruin my attempts at 180s' and then I went out and practiced them loads and now I can do them ok. So the moral of the story is, if you pull your brake mid trick, DON'T. Use deathgrip on a trials bike, brakeless on a bmx.

I progressed way more learning them when I was brakeless for a few days, rolling into a fakie then just pulling up, but on flat I can sort of use my brake to get more momentum if I'm pulling up from a standstill. Oh yea, this thread is about 180s... Edited February 28, 2011 by bikeperson45
sstein
I just thought for correcting your height on the back wheel, (I replied to your comment on pinkbike by the way) Yeah it will correct your height and probably make you fall off the back, use chain tension or just balance to correct your height. Brakes are for stopping, the only way to learn proper manuals (going in either direction) in my opinion is to do them brakless.
