tdubz
Got a bit of confusion with bolts etc wondered if people could point me in the right direction recently threaded an allen key bolt in my maggy (not overtightened just ripped straight outta the frame) so obviously a helicoil is in order, not a problem engineers do them at work will probs get all 4 threads done to be on the safe side i was thinking about running some slightly longer bolts the current bolt that threaded was a size 4 allen key bolt, with the helicoil i would be going to size 5 is that correct bolt length is the next question the current bolts i have knocking about are 3cm of thread, can i get longer size 5 allen key bolts so that there will be more thread bolt contact because with my magura clamps there doesnt seem to be much and i can see it happening again any help or a point in the right direction of some more suitable bolts would be great thanks
Mark W
If you're helicoiling them they should ideally end up the same thread size (M5). You shouldn't be able to strip the helicoils once done.
tdubz
thanks mark definatly getting the helicoils done so M5 is that a size 5 on an allen key set bolt? may seem a complete noob but keep confusing myself the stripped bolt was a size 4 on the allen key set so does that mean itd go to a size 5 after helicoil? might just hand it to engineers at work and say make this work haha
Mark W
It'll still be M5 (which they were to begin with - M5 bolts usually need a 4mm allen key), which is good in that it means you don't have to file your clamps and any potential booster/spacers out in future. Rob Leech
thanks mark definatly getting the helicoils done so M5 is that a size 5 on an allen key set bolt? may seem a complete noob but keep confusing myself the stripped bolt was a size 4 on the allen key set so does that mean itd go to a size 5 after helicoil? might just hand it to engineers at work and say make this work haha M5 is the size of the thread, so in this case, 5mm, M6 is 6mm, M8 is 8mm.... and it goes on. M5 bolts can come with a 4 or 5mm allen cap head . The bolts you were using should be fine in the new helicoils . Cheers, Josh
sstein
I dont know about using the same bolts, if you are saying there is not much of them sticking through the mounts to go into the frame maybe get longer ones. are you using a booster or spacers? Ateam
I had a similar problem with my rear brake mounts. I was running a 4 bolt booster on a stock Meta with HS33. The left rear frame mount stripped out. I was able to run a bit longer M5 after filing it down that connected with the bottom set of frame brake mount threads. The top few threads are stripped, not the complete set of threads. My bike is a Meta (stupid strong) and the main purpose of the booster was to protect the brake line cross over, not so much for stability/frame flex. So I picked up a 2 bolt booster and was able to run my original M5 bolt and used the booster spacer on the bad threaded brake mount. It works fine but soon to install 4 heli-coils to get rid of the long M5 and spacer. Edited February 24, 2011 by Ateam
