Dupree81
hi just built my first custom ride, for street use, a stock because street 2010, loaded with hope parts, i have the option for having the freewheel on the back or the front? would like to know if there are any benefits of having the freewheel on the cranks? or doesn't it matter what way round you do it? thanks
N.Wood
Front, moved the weight to the centre, easier to change in a comp and is the 'norm' for trials bikes these days.
PebbleWrestler
been wondering about this myself, i know a lot of old school guys swear by kings...what is the difference in feel, exactly?? i know weight more to the center with a ffw setup, but is that really the only main difference? please excuse the cluelessness of my question.. I popped 2 enos and bedded them in perfect just stick with a ti profile and srvice it regually is good on the wait side to.
JDâ„¢
Don't forget that if you do any street stuff where you're removing your feet then the cranks will spin when the rear wheel spins - not ideal for knowing where they're going to be when you land! sstein
I also find that if you tend to go for 180s with any sort of speed freewhweels dont cope nearly as well as freehubs. (though both will manage, just freehubs feel nicer for fakies and reverts in my opinion)
J.KYDD
For streety, spinny riding, i'd stick to rear freehub. For pure trials use definitely ffw. 18-15 has become the gearing of choice for 90% of stock riders and that setup is only really possible with a freewheel if you run it on the cranks. WIGAN ??
iv just today gone back to pro2 from a ffw, cant really feel the difference in where the weight is if im honest, only reason i got rid of it though is because the chain would go round and make an awfull noise and it used to drive me insane, not a problem with ffw though, just me being a fanny
Dupree81
OK Ive read your replies thank you, maybe i didn't explain to well i like what Ive read so far, I'm a newbie so have to bear with me a Little, this has got my attention: JDâ„¢ Posted Yesterday, 10:02 AM Don't forget that if you do any street stuff where you're removing your feet then the cranks will spin when the rear wheel spins - not ideal for knowing where they're going to be when you land! the style of riding i want to learn is very smiler to Danny mac and Ali c, but what to do it on a 26", foot jams, tail whips, will a front freewheel benefit there or best to keep the free hub? thank you

JDâ„¢
I'd definitely recommend sticking with a rear freehub then, you'll notice that none* of the decent street style riders use a FFW and that's definitely for a reason - they'd use FFW if the benefits outweighed the drawbacks. *to my knowledge anyway
WIGAN ??
also freewheels only come in like 18 tooth max, so thers no way youd be able to get a decent gearing for streety stuff

Zetec S
I prefer rear cassette/freewheel but then i used to be a bmx'er! i've had loads of trouble with crappy front free wheels (lock ring kept going loose, can be spot welded but still)
sstein
also freewheels only come in like 18 tooth max, so thers no way youd be able to get a decent gearing for streety stuff if you are riding street trials 18:15 would be fine, there is no way I would ever go lower than 18:13 for street trials so it should be fine in that respect. just not great because the cranks keep spinning when you take your feet off, the chain will drag your trousers in if you are not careful and it feels rank for streetier stuff
