Luke Dunstan
Just purchased my first Blu-Ray player, And I'm look for some impressive films. Just a couple to really show how good Blu-Ray can actually be. I don't really mind if the film itself isn't great, just one with really good visuals. So far I have I Am Legend, and Toy Story 3 as I heard Disney animation films are meant to be pretty impressive. What do you guys think are good ones to go for, from personal experience not what you think might be good. Cheers

Muel
I had Pulp Fiction in 1080p ripped from a Blu-Ray DVD. It was an experience to say the least.

Al_Fel
Inception! I watched this film a few weeks ago and thought it was totally dog turd. It bored the shit out of me. I'm going to put a vote in for Avatar. This film was amazing. It wasn't anything like I was expecting it be either.
Muel
How's the quality on a movie filmed before HD? It was filmed on film. They just went back and re-chopped it up into pixels I believe, so the quality is excellent. Best 1080p film I've had actually.
Ali C
another vote for Avatar, I was REALLY impressed with the visuals and the story was pretty good too (if slightly predicable)
Mikee
The dark knight. Some of it was shot in IMAX aswell which looks fantastic on blu-ray. Great film aswell which is a bonus.

OD404
Anything fairly recent, with a reasonable amount of special effects or impressive landscapes will bring out the best in Bluray. So along with the current suggestions, here are a couple more: Lord of the Rings Transformers The Planet Earth series (and similar) Along with those I also recently got Fight Club and Predator, and was amazed at how well the conversions were done. Just about to order the Alien Quadrilogy on Bluray so hoping the conversions are just as good.
Revolver
I should think anything that's filmed on actual film could be upscaled easily.
eskimo
All the films upscaled and put on blu-ray i've seen have been really good. Even just banging in a normal DVD into an upscaling player gives surprisingly good results. But i suppose it'll depend on your player and tv. Definitely want a 5.1 surround though
Matthew62
The dark knight. Some of it was shot in IMAX aswell which looks fantastic on blu-ray. Great film aswell which is a bonus. This is very true. The IMAX scenes are amazing and the lengths they went to, to film it are amazing. Despite being a Hollywood, action-hero film i think it's amazing. The Joker character was played to perfection and makes up for just how stupid Batman sounds and acts. Avatar on the other hand is the worst thing i have ever seen in my life. Boring, predictable, Americanised to the extreme, overly-stylised and all round a massive waste of time. Genuinly the worst film i have ever seen in my entire life - there is nothing good i could ever say about it.

No, it really is a good film if you don't want to think hard, but be impressed with digital effects.
Si-man
Avatar is all about the effects and graphics, not the story. Kinda like the game Crysis on the PC. Avatar on blu ray on an LED screen literally looks like real life its that good. Edited February 10, 2011 by Si-man
Al_Fel
I must be a mong then because I actually liked the Avatar Story. I watched it with the impression it was going to be a shitty Disney kind of film. I really got into the story and enjoyed the film. A powerful scene for me was when the "horse" was running through the forest on fire. I thought that was pretty brutal.

Which is kinda my point. I don't give a plop about what CGI goes in to a film. It's gots to be abouts the story for me. The effects were the dominant element to (such a friggin long) the film and yeah you're marginally impressed for the first 5 minutes. 3 hours later and my god i wished they'd have given more than 5 minutes to the plot and storyline. it's a film made by Americans for Americans from my point of view. They can keep their corn dogs - i want some meat y'all.
dann2707
For me, Avatar really showed what they could do with 3D combined with high def CGI and it blew me away. Sure the story line was pretty much pocahontas but just with blue people... If you are wanting a Bluray film to show what Bluray can do, get Avatar! Mat Tea Why
Just about to order the Alien Quadrilogy on Bluray so hoping the conversions are just as good. Got a discount on that when I bought my player. They look stunning mate It was written and directed by Chris Nolan though, Who is english. English brains + Hollywood budget = win? Exactly. It seems to be everything Nolan touches turns to gold. On that note you might as well add Memento and The Prestige to your list of films, I only have them on DVD but I imagine they would look great in HD. No Country for Old Men and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon look fantastic in HD too. Edited February 10, 2011 by Mat Tea Why

Krisboats
Rambo 4, on blu ray, with surround sound, f**k yes. Also, Black Hawk Down is absolutely amazing in Blu Ray form. Only on the audio side, too much induced film grain on it to make it really stand out as a decent visual standard. In order of visuals... Up - the pixar animation (the colours and clarity during the balloon release scene was fantastic, add to that a witty and clever stoyrline and fullscreen 1.77:1 ratio makes it a great showcase film) Avatar Dark knight Transformers 1&2 Iron man 1&2 Band of brothers boxset (fullscreen 1.77:1 goodness again, less than £18 in tesco too) Stealth
