Mattio
Hi there guys, as I've posted before I'm after a cheap(ish) trials bike to learn on as I'm a total beginner. Now quite a few have mentioned the MAD Phase 1.2, they look great bikes and currently talking to someone at the moment about one. However I've just been offered a MAD Phase 1.3 - it's meant to be in pretty good condition and he wants £100 for it. I was just wondering if you guys thought that it's a good price, I think it's pretty cheap? And if it would be ok or would it be more hassle - as I wouldn't want to be upgrading parts straight away I'm looking for something I can mess around on and try to learn. Cheers for any & all replies, regards, Matt.
CalopS
£100 for a full stock in working condition is a steal especialy if your just learning the basics. Go for it.

That's what I thought! The only thing that put me off to be honest was a lot of people on the few reviews I found said that they weren't all that, however it looks good, its a decent price... Shouldn't really lose on it?
CalopS
well I wouldnt say it was a modern bike in terms of geo and spec. Theres some thing you will want to upgrade after a while but you will get that with any bike. but if you are just starting out its a good bike. Saying that all the people that ride for MAD are awsome riders so just because it isnt modern geo doesnt mean its only a beggingers bike. EDIT: the red bike in this is a Phase http://vimeo.com/2420729 Edited February 8, 2011 by CalopS
Mattio
Cheers for your help mate! Don't suppose anyone can recommend a good site for things such as breaks pads etc? Seen a few makes of pads recommended etc but been trying to find the best place to order from.
CalopS
Tarty bikes for most pads. Heatsink and Phat pads have there own websites too. Look through the Pad review thread for ideas

isitafox
The only thing to think about with a 1.3 is I'm pretty sure they run a v brake on the rear instead of a magura so you just have to decide what you'd prefer to use yourself
Ali C
vee brakes for the mega win!
Mattio
Yeah I think it runs a V on the back, for the time being I'd probably just get a set of decent pads to put in there however in the future maybe look to upgrade it. This is all dependent on whether or not I've still got the bike, as I say it's just really to try and get into trials for a few months. isitafox
If you get the right v setup you'll probably have no need to upgrade the frame anytime soon. Just get some tnn lgv pads an the brake setup well and it should perform as well as if not better than a magura, as I said before it's all personal preference. onza1
For a £100 bargain One thing to think mags are better I dnt care what people say I ride mod with vees and decent pads and my stock with mags and standard black pads an the difference is unreal
Mattio
Cheers for the replies guys, I understand that a lot of it is obviously rider preference so really just trial and error. The V's will do me fine for the first few months, I'm sure. Just a quick question, does anyone at all rate the Onza T-Bird? Just got a message from a mate who's said a friend of his has an Onza T-Bird for sale, all I really know is it's 20" wheels, V brakes and not a bad little bike? Personally like the sound of the Phase as people really do seem to rate them but didn't know if the Onza would be a good bike? Forgot to put, would also be around £100ish. Cheers for the replies guys, all been incredibly helpful! (A) Edited February 8, 2011 by Mattio
bikeperson45
I think the Phase would be better over the Onza overall for the same price. From what I've heard the Phase frames ride nicely and when you do want to upgrade parts it'll be a better frame to upgrade around.
