Rubber Queen Vs Rain King

Been using the rubber queen for the last 2 years or so and got on reasonably well with it, Ive found the grip to generally be more than acceptable for street (I dont have a great deal of natural for local rides :( ), the bounce was good but the stability is sorely lacking. Found that the sweetspot pressure for me was about 18psi, this gave a reasonably stable tyre although it would still fold if you landed sideways, it would also sometimes rebound scarily if not landing square. I only pinched it once in all that time (with a standard tube) but I do try to ride as smooth as possible and dont consider myself a basher :)

Got the rain king off bigman today, about 50% worn and some side knobbles trimmed for frame clearance, fitted it and pumped it up, measured 5psi in it and had a hop round the garden, a little soft but instantly the increased stability is noticeable. Upped it to 10psi and went for a 30 minute ride and wow. The tyre grips easily where the rubber queen would have slipped (sloping rocks particularly), was consistantly more controllable on the rear wheel with far more positive feedback; in general rear wheel confidence has improved dramatically due to the reduced rebound. Another 5psi wouldnt hurt as I got the tyre to fold whilst booning sideways up a 30° sloped rock (something the RQ would have slipped out on) but that is something I will need to play around with.

Size wise, the rain king comes out considerably smaller on my rim (dx32 - 38mm wide) than the rubber queen, The only issues Ive ever had with tyre clearance on the triton has been with the centre tread buzzing on the seatstay bridge/gusset, the rain king has a good 5-10mm clearance now with the worn tread. Weight wise, the rubber queen was 800g (about 50% worn) and the rain king was 1180g so a fair increase in weight, but my bike is still only about 9.2kg so plenty light enough for me :)

All in all the increased stability is what I expected (and why I bought the tyre) but the difference its immediately made to my confidence is incredible (Y)

Sorry for all the people who already knew this info, thought I would add my own experiences to the trials forum collective knowledge :)

Sweet contribution with the review/comparison, but how on earth can you run 10psi?!

I used to run 9psi in my old maxxis dual ply! Need it a touch higher though as it did fold once, perhaps as I start getting better on the bike and going for bigger stuff I might need to up the pressure slightly :)

Do you not find that as soon as you're on a corner/pointy thing/rail you're rimming out?

Im sure I will find that as I go along, I dont really have any pointy things to ride here and Im not a fan of rails; as I said, it will be trial and error till I find a suitable pressure :)

Not knocking it, sorry if it came across that way, just strikes me as being exceedingly low that's all :P

I've found with my Der Kaiser that the sidewalls are stiff enough to allow a lower pressure so I'm down to about 25psi or so, but it retains a nice bounce and still rolls well enough. The compound is sticky enough for grip in most situations though, so running it a little harder doesn't seem to be a penalty as such :)

I actually can't wait to try my Der Kaiser out after reading about this black chilli compound! All I need is wheels!

I cant see you being dissapointed :)

I wasnt supposed to go out tonight seeing as I was out yesterday and Im riding again tomorrow, Im not sure if my body can keep up with 3 consecutive days riding now Im the wrong age of 30 :D

Been using the rubber queen for afew rides, getting bigger gaps and side hops, grip is ok but i do find i have to fight like hell to stop it going out of control, the bounce is quite bad on rocks etc. back to the der kaiser!!!!

Put 5psi more in and try again - the grip still isn't as good as a Kaiser, but you will find it more stable with a bit more air in and the springiness and lightness of that tyre does suit some people.

Hi adam, right i'll try that, i did love it as i was mastering 7.5-8ft gaps and side hops where far easier but did fold alot, thats at 21psi so will do what you said and put it up to 24-26psi and see how it go's. i found it balanced the bike of well. the der kaiser is brill on rocks but i find am trying alot harder to sidehop and gap. what psi do you run the rubber queen at?? i know every one run different set ups but out of interest. With the der kaiser i run 18psi with noproblems.

cheers

Is that the rubber queen 2.4 you are on about or 2.2?

Any good in the wet?

its the 2.4. it does grip well yes, not as good as der kaiser though.

As an update to this, been out a couple of times since I made the thread....

Ive upped the pressure to 12psi, thats enough to get it stable for me at the moment, it does still rim out alittle on edges but nothing major. Grip is still phenomenal but no rolling on sloping rocks, just sticks where it is. As I said before the predictability and stability has done wonders for my confidence, Ive got far more time to prepare to preload because Im not working hard to keep the tyre gripping and stable. Im still crap though <_<
