Creating A Dot Com

I recently had a brain wave after years of trying to think of a good website that hasn't already been thought of. I can't see a way to make money from the visitors to the site, but from the small amount of research I've done this could be pretty big, so the only way to make money from this sort of website would be advertising.

I know basic HTML coding, but wouldn't even attempt to make the website myself, I think I need some kind of geographical software etc so that's out of the question for me. The son of the owner where I work runs his own successful I.T firm in Reading, and I get on with him fairly well, but at the end of the day...he's an arsehole so I don't really want to go running to him for help unless I really have to.

I've been in talks with the owner of the domain name to purchase it, but as I don't know how much you should pay for a domain name, I don't wan't to get fleeced. I made an offer of £50 and they came back with a counter offer of £500.

Basically, any advice to someone starting a website for the first time, any pitfalls and things to look out for?

Cheers for any help and input chaps (and Chappets)

Price of the domain depends on a lot of factors. It's impossible to suggest without knowing it. Prices range from £5 to £millions.

Other than that;

You have everyone on PAPER and signed to what you're going to purchase.

Check to see if the domain is blacklisted - often because of spam viruses on mail servers.

Check the previous use of the website.

Make sure the domain isn't used by another company - at the end of the day whilst he may lose the domain, he may still have the copyright on the tradename - a headache to sell if its copyrighted by another party.

Lastly, you can hold the domain name - you don't have to have a website linked to it

Also, check the expiration of the domain! You may well end up paying £500 for a domain that expires in Feb 2011...

Lots of pitfalls, potentially a lot of money and therein lots of risk.

Finding the right person to build the site for you is key. If you don't have previous experience with web ventures, it's probably a good idea to get second opinions before you open your wallet.

Like I'm going to take it. I really can't be arsed. We will all know when he makes it anyway. If someone wants to copy him then they will... really makes no difference.

BTW - I'm not copying just wanted to know.

So you'd post a really great idea on a forum viewed by thousands right?

I'd say most products do well because they're first on the market, initially. Look at MySpace - it held its own for a couple of years before Facebook came along. Do you reckon the guy that came up with MySpace posted his idea on a public forum?

I doubt it. I wasn't saying you'd copy him, but potentially others might.

Lot's to think about there, there's more to domain names than I first thought! Cheers (Y)

I think in then end, I'm going to have to ask the owners son. It would suck to splash money on something without the correct knowledge only to watch it flop.

Haha, I know you wouldn't make it. But as Mike said, someone else could.

How do I know to trust you sir :shifty:

EDIT: that sounded pretty rude, appreciate it mate (Y)

Haha, you don't. But it's what I do, so you'd know of more businesses run by me if I was stealing peoples ideas - I've heard some pretty damn good ones over the past 6 months! No worries if you don't want to, but the offer's there (Y)
