bikeperson45
Hello I'm slowly becoming less nooby at mechanics but having problems swapping forks. I've got an Echo headset which I assume is sealed as I can't see the bearings. I took my forks of my old bike and when they're fitted they're able to wobble from side to side slightly and they're the right diameter. Above the crown of these forks, is the crown race (or so I think) and when fitted in the frame it is exposed. Should it be able to slide in the gap between the steerer and the headset? Thanks
isitafox
Have you got any pictures??
bikeperson45
I'm trying, but I'm also awful with computers. Basically now what it seems to be, is that I can se the crown race under the headset. Should that be so? Thanks
Mark W
Without photos it's pretty tricky to get what you mean... Basically, if you can't see the angled 'inner' part of the crown race it should be fine. You can usually see them to some extent. If there's a larger gap (as in you can pretty much see all the race) then that's obviously not right, but it's always going to be partially visible. bikeperson45
Basically, I'm thinking I need the correct size crown race. Here's some pictures and I'd like to remind you I'm awful at all mechanical things. I also have a little bearing thing that's got a gap on presumably to help get it on the steerer, where does this go? Thanks
Matt Burrows
lol yeah you got it, crown races are specific to each headset. If you change forks or headset, you need to switch the crown race over.
bikeperson45
Ah, okay then. Took the old crown thing off and I think this is the right one for the headset? And assuming it is how do I get it to the bottom of the steerer without damaging it? I've tried a screwdriver and hammer but any other suggestions? Thanks Right crown race for the Echo headset? isitafox
With the split in it should go down with a little force

isitafox
Shouldn't think so, that looks like the one I had with my Echo headset. Just needed tapping down onto the wider part of the steerer. Think there's only one size as all the headsets are 1 1/8"
bikeperson45
Sorry, I'm a complete idiot, your right. However, now the problem is they're in but they don't turn freely, when I push them they'll only turn a quarter around. I can hear rubbing, solutions? Thanks again
Azarathal
Rubbing is top cap too tight normally. Sounds like you're biting the bearings.

That looks more like the compression ring to me? How well does it fit together now? There shouldn't be any rubbing! It should spin very easily, something is very wrong. N.Wood
As Matt said, that looks like the compression ring. There should be one that looks the same/similar as the one you took off the forks. The compression ring is what goes at the top usually just under the stem or under a bearing cover. Maybe photograph all the parts you have and we can point you in the right direction?
AdamR28
Right crown race for the Echo headset? Unfortunately not - that looks more like a top compression wedge from an FSA Pig than a bottom wedge from an Echo headset. The Echo's lower wedge is steel (that looks alloy on the picture), and the top one should be black and aluminium. Did you get the headset 2nd hand? That might explain it... bikeperson45
Okay, so I have another of those rings that is now acting as a crown race for my fork which seems to be a compression ring. When I took the Echo forks that were previously used with this headset I don't think there was a crown race at all? Would that work, because nothing was attached to the fork like it was for the pair I'm attempting to put on. Here's a picture of everything, which is very little but here it is anyway. There's also a picture of the crown race for the other FSA headset. Thanks for all the help.
bikeperson45
Bump please Can I continue to use that compressor ring or should I get a new crown race, and if so which one for that Echo headset? It was bought second hand so's it possible he bodged it that way? Thanks
