Luke Dunstan
Due an upgrade soon, and I'm really linking the look of the Windows 7 phones. Has anyone got one yet? any advice would be good. I know previous windows phone before 7 were meant to be pretty bad. Really can't make my mind up. isitafox
I was considering this as I'd heard good things about windows mobile 7 platform but I was put off at being tied down to another very strict operating system and the lack of video playback formats available (on the HTC HD7 at least) so I'm gonna go for an android phone. Not sure what your thoughts or experiences are with them but have you considered one?

I'd thought of Android, The thing that was swaying me toward Windows 7 was the clean look and how fast it operated. At the moment it's between that, iPhone or the blackberry Torch. I'm terrible with decisions. Are there any major plus sides to Android over the others??
isitafox
Mainly the fact that as its an open platform operating system anyone can make apps for them. You can get most of the apps available on iPhone plus loads more, stuff like free turn by turn google sat nav for free. I've had an iPhone for the last 18 months and can't wait to get rid of it, I had it jailbroken for a while but your still so restricted. If you want something to entertain as well as function as a phone I'd go android.

isitafox
Currently the best is probably the samsung galaxy s or google nexus s, or if you don't mind massive phone the dell streak is pretty good. I'll either be getting the samsung or dell when I upgrade on the 26th!
Bronz
My boss just went from iPhone to the Windows 7 phone. It pissed him off as being such an inferioir device that he switched back a few days later. If it's between iPhone and Windows 7, I'd say iPhone based on that alone. For example the speed of it, or just generally not up to the iPhone level?
MadManMike
^ I'd rather try it for myself, rather than take someone's word for it. If I trusted my brothers opinion, I'd have an iMac. Luckily I got to use his enough to realise I don't get on with them, so built myself a PC... Slightly unrelated I know, just saying you're better off trying something rather than trusting someone elses opinion.

Can't remember exactly as we didn't speak about it for ling but along the lines of it being far less intuitive and just not seeming as polished/finished as the iPhone. dann2707
Have a play on a Samsung Galaxy S, they are amazing; so smooth and no lag compared to older samsungs. Android is a fantastic OS as it has much more customisability than the iPhone. Edited January 16, 2011 by dann2707
Luke Dunstan
Have a play on a Samsung Galaxy S, they are amazing; so smooth and no lag compared to older samsungs. Android is a fantastic OS as it has much more customisability than the iPhone. Went in to town yesterday to have a look at some. Carphone Warehouse didn't have any at all, and the O2 shop only had dummy phones. I've played on the Blackberry and iPhone, so it's just the 7 I need to finger. dann2707
Another vote! I think it's when people think of Samsung they think a super laggy touch screen system. My next door neighbour thought just that as I unboxed mine last week, saying how he thought it's going to be slow. When I set it all up he had a play and was convinced, he loves it. Oh and btw this guy is a macfag, owning a 3GS too so that kinda furthermore upvotes the SGS in my opinion.
quick_spider
I've recently moved from a WM 6.5 device to a iphone 4. Initially I was impressed with the iphone, but the cracks are showing through now and I'm of the opinion that they're all as bad as each other for bugs/fixes. Speed/feature wise there doesn't seem to be much in it. Most recent gripe with the iphone is that youtube doesn't work properly on wifi. Googling around, this is an old problem which Apple just haven't bothered to fix. I'll probably go back to WM on the grounds that the XDA developers site has fixes for most of the bugs MS couldn't be arsed to fix. The same isn't true for the iphone, even if you jailbreak etc... My recommendation would be Android or Windows 7.
isitafox
I went into my local O2 store today to have a look ready for next week and I can safely say the Dell Streak is f*****g MASSIVE! Still tempted though as it was so smooth and fast to use, if not that it'll definately be a galaxy. Whats worse though is I can guarantee within a month the newer version will be out and as a tech freak I'll be gutted!
munkee
If you google the "samsung galaxy mini" that is the newer version of the galaxy s that is coming out. Slightly smaller and 100% rip off looks for the iphone 4. The actual "upgrade" to the galaxy s is the nexus s. However bar a flash on the camera and a led light for notifications there is 0 difference. You can port all of the updates for the nexus s over to the galaxy s. I wouldnt bother getting it over the galaxy at present. There is a good development following for the galaxy s at the moment fixing and improving and it is definitely a phone you wont want to be upgrading any time soon. isitafox
Read a very bad review of the nexus saying the actual body of the phone was really flimsy and felt cheap and nasty compared to some of the older google phones and the galaxy. Think I'll definately be going samsung, you made a choice yet Dunstan??

Think I'll definately be going samsung, you made a choice yet Dunstan?? Not yet. Spoke to T-mobile yesterday and they said that because I have been late for a few payments, I might not get an upgrade. So that's £70 a month for 2 years and they can justify not letting me have an upgrade? It's not definite but it's a 50/50 chance. May well have to buy one, and I'm still not made a final decision!!! Between iPhone 4 and an android, probably a HTC. Saw the Nexus being reviewed on the Gadget Show and it didn't do overly well. The camera was pretty poor and came out on bottom against a 3GS and a Windows 6.5 phone.

Luke Dunstan
Why would you get the iphone 4? Its so expensive and over rated... Mehhhhh. There's so many pros and cons of each. Tomm
I've recently moved from a WM 6.5 device to a iphone 4. Initially I was impressed with the iphone, but the cracks are showing through now and I'm of the opinion that they're all as bad as each other for bugs/fixes. Seriously?! Windows Mobile was compete toss. Sure it had the features but it was completely, utterly, horrible to use. The iPhone is a complete revelation by comparison - buttery smooth navigation and soooo much more polish. Just unlocking the phone is a pleasure. That's the one problem I have with the recent iPhone-a-likes (I.e. Android phones) - none of them have managed to achieve the same polish and smooth scrolling as even the original (3.5 year old) iPhone. However, I can see that there's certainly some advantages of the Android platform. I personally don't think there's better than the iPhone 4, though (granted, it's expensive). As for Windows Phone 7 - it looks good actually. I think it's pretty early stages for it, there are lots of important features missing (copy/paste) and I don't think I could get along with it just yet. Give it 6 months and see what happens. I do like the interface though - Kudos for Microsoft to actually taking the time making something look nice. The various information screens pulling data from everywhere (Facebook, twitter, emails, texts etc) almost make the iPhone's app-based system look a bit dated! Unless Apple change the interface soon, I think a lot of people will move over to Android / WP7. I just might, out of boredom.
