isitafox
I had a quick spin on my new because earlier and the cranks felt really weird. Not sure if it's just because I've not ridden a stock since about November but it didn't feel right, I think the arms are 175's and they felt massive so wondered if anyone thought dropping down to 170's will make much difference to how the bike rides and feels? I'm pretty sure my mod uses 165's so I can't swap them over to try but I don't wanna splash £50 on a new set if they won't be right. And I've had these cranks on my last 3 frames and they felt ok which is why I'm a bit confused!
Jon Alty
Are you running the same gear ratio as before? Also is it definitely something to do with the drivetrain thats making it feel wierd, not the wrong stem/bars combo?
isitafox
Yeah it's exactly the same ratio but it felt odd when I was pedalling, I suppose it could be as I'm riding a frame with a BB rise of 35mm compared to the 15mm's on my last 2 frames so it might be that making it feel weird. When one side was at the top of the pedal stroke though it just felt huge, would running 170's make much difference to leverage and how much power I can put down? Greetings
Well this won't answer your question but 17:16 on 158mm cranks feels roughly the same as 17:14 on 175mm cranks. The maths is down to you.

Rafal
18:16, 165mm, 16T is the winner for me since i tried it 1y ago Edited January 11, 2011 by Rafal
forteh
I use 165 burns, 18:16 is too light for me but 18:15 is a touch heavy; have found that 16:14 is a happy medium and works out just slightly lighter than 18:15 on 175 cranks
Matt Vandart
Its the bb height/bar stem combo that is making it weird. If i was you I would do nothing, you will soon get used to it. By the way I use 170mm cranks and it makes f**k all difference (I used to use 175mm)
isitafox
Cheers Matt, would 170's make much difference from the 165's on my mod? Heard quite a few people say they use them.
Alex Dark
Cheers Matt, would 170's make much difference from the 165's on my mod? Heard quite a few people say they use them. I reckon its noticable. I run 170 burns with 18:16 Might be changing to 16:14 but we'll see
Matt Vandart
I forgot to say I run 16/14 on the suggestion of by our good buddy forteh, was weird for up to back wheel at first but got used to it quickly.
LukasMcNeal
I used 175s on a mod and ill be using them on my stock so it can be that bad?
SamKidney
Im running 170mm TrialTech cranks on my Python and feels sweet with an 18/ 12 setup. Though Ive been riding an Adamant A1 with the same 170 trialtech arms and feels great with a 18/ 15 setup. Its a +15 bb though with quite a low front end
Pepo09
I've Been using 170mm and they rock. Highly recommended Echo TR
pogo
165 burns with 18:15, still feels too light though.
jambo
170mm trialtech cranks with 18:15 on my yaabaa 1499 feels good so did the 18:16 but a wee bit light for my liking.
Jon Alty
Ive allways used 170mm cranks on my stock. Anyone tried 18:14? Sometimes think 18:15 is a bit light when your tackling things at a bit of speed, dont get much power. But on the other hand, for going from still, 18:14 may be a bit heavy :\. Opinions? trialsmax04
Its very much personal opinion. I have 175 tryall cranks and 18:14was too heavy. 18:15 was nice. 18:16 is more my cup of tea Much better for static moves.
