Kenny--Trials
Hey guys, I got some new cranks today but i cant put them on untill i get the ones that are on my bike, off. The problem is that my driveside crank is threaded where the crank puller would usually go. Ive tried getting it off by hitting it with a large hammer. The only other way i can think of doing it is to saw through my bottom bracket, but i only want to do that as a last resort. I know about the threadless crank puller but i cant get hold of one. Any tips or ways of getting it off?
Little Yoshi
Find a metal rod then you can put into your bb. Give the puller something to push against. I use a some re-bar or a threaded rod
AlexxRogers
Take out your crank bolt, loosen your chain and ride around.
trialsrider101
This works for me. First turn the bike upside down, so you get a better view of the crank, Then take a ball ended hammer and put the ball end into where you would put the crank puller, get somebody to hold it there while you hit the other side hard with a lump hammer this stops the energy from "hitting it hard" from doing anything other than taking off your crank job done. Kenny--Trials
Take out your crank bolt, loosen your chain and ride around. does this work for taper? Thermal lance. I dont want to sound dumb, but what is that? This works for me. trialsrider101
no because all the energy from hitting the crank arm goes into the crank arm should slide right off

j-bonham@hotmail.com
not on square taper it's more effective on a square taper dude. just take the bolt out an ride around for a bit. giving good pressure on the cranks. keep an eye on it though. don't want it to fall of while ur riding. failing that, boil the kettle..... pour the water over where the crank joins the bb. that'll hopefully loosen it further. then ride around on it agen. (or no nonsense, get a blowtorch on its ass an take it to town)
Rob Leech
failing that, boil the kettle..... pour the water over where the crank joins the bb. do this, then hit it with a hammer, if it still aint coming off, hit it harder you woman! Also, put a bog roll round the crank, will stop you damaging it with the hammer . Josh.
Jon Alty
I wouldnt recommend riding around to loosen it on a square taper, as if it gets too loose you might round it off a bit. Get a small piece of wood and place it as close to the bb spindle as you can, making sure it spreads accross the whole crank (doesnt need to spread length ways), pour boiling water on it as said before, and then hit the wood as close to the BB spindle as you can (dont hit your hand, that will hurt ). The wood will protect your crank and should spread the load of the hammer evenly accross the crank, helping you get the force square to the crank, so it should come off easier. Ive done it before but now i have a crank puller i know that they arent on there as tight as some others ive used it the past. If its really stuck on there then maybe take it to your LBS and see if they can do anything? Edited January 10, 2011 by Jon Alty
