davidbarr
Hi guys. I went out to the garage to take my stem off. The problem is, the bolt on the topcap turns but it isn't actually loosening. Anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.
Ali C
sounds exactly like the threaded section of the star nut is spinning.

Miles Mallinson
A new star nut is the only way really, just knock it out with a bit of slim metal piping or thick dowel and get your LBS to fit a new one its a simple job. I can't get access to my star nut as the top cap won't come off.
Miles Mallinson
erm then take your forks off and try and tap the star nut out the other way, or maybe try and lever the top cap off with a screw driver if you can. Do you have alot of of spacers under your stem it might be because there isn't enough thread contact with you top cap bolt and star nut just so you don't do it again. Guess i'll have to lever the cap off then. The forks won't come with it still on.

Simpson
erm then take your forks off and try and tap the star nut out the other way. Don't comment on stuff you haven't even thought about before you post.... if you cant get the star nut out how can he get his forks off? durrr If your lucky then you can take your front wheel out, and fit a small metal pipe (like an allen key or somthing) up the forks and then hammer the shit out the star nut to push it up the forks, it takes some propper welly so dont f**k about with it. Or Grind off your top cap. The 1st option has worked for me a couple of times before.

That was a momentary lasp of concentration and I' am truly sorry but I did say the same thing as you so don't get so annoyed, but that proberly will damaged the forks abit. MadManMike
Another vote for drilling the bolt out. Quick & easy! Had to do that on my old bike and was pleased with how easy it was. Was expecting major hassle...
