Dan6061
What about the Middleburn Supertrials bash's (or whatever they're called?) That would've involved new moulds, machinery, etc... for a niche sport. FFW 'Burns would be nice to see!

Ali C
it's true they did make the bash ring stuff, but thats just a fairly "simple" thing to produce compared with forged crank arms

They'd have to make everything to manafacture it from scratch. With screw on cranks, you'd just have to modify an old mould and cnc program
Revolver
It depends on the shape of the mould and where the metal pours in.
Martin Reynolds
It depends on the shape of the mould and where the metal pours in. True. Im not saying its not possible to be done, im just saying i think its alot easier than everyone gives it credit for
Luke Rainbird
Seriously, you're still going with this?! If you're that desperate for answers, email Middleburn. 'til then take it from people who evidently have a better idea than you, it's not worth their while!
Ali C
Middleburn have been asked to do screw on cranks (and even made a one-off set for Adam) but they say it's not worth making a new mould and can't/won't modify the existing one. AdamR28
Cranks = Middleburn say it needs new tooling for enough meat for threads. I said they could just take a bit more meat off the end of the arm, but they weren't happy with that so the idea got canned. Bashring = not from tooling, so they can make any size without much trouble at all.

AdamR28
Splined freewheel / crank interface. Probably already been said. done. http://www.trial-inside.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1790:la-nouvelle-roue-libre-atomz&catid=39:inside&Itemid=61&ref=nf To be fair it just looks like a mock up, since there's no way of holding that one onto the crank... craigjames
Strangely I went into the LBS the other day to use the vice to get my old cog off and get my FFW on and the mechanic asked why they didn't have splined free wheels like a Shimano cassette. Mark W
Would've thought it would reduce clearance possibly? In so much as you'd need to have a lockring too, and you can't really get away with making a lot of freewheels any narrower.
forteh
Would've thought it would reduce clearance possibly? In so much as you'd need to have a lockring too, and you can't really get away with making a lot of freewheels any narrower. You could recess the lockring into the body of the freewheel, the splines wouldnt need to run the full width of the freewheel, 10mm would be sufficient leaving enough thickness for a recessed lockring. The posts about middleburns being cast in a mould made me FFW burns would be awesome, have often looked at how an adaptor could be made to suit the standard cranks but its just not going to happen without the huge cost of retooling
Ali C
i know a forging tool is different to casting, but hey ho

dann2707
Some kind of clamping design instead of the 4 bolts for maguras. Such a pain unscrewing, screwing, unscrewing, screwing bolts when you need to adjust them. not sure how it would work though.
