Sam Moss
I am just after a new brake cable for my front v-brake and I don't know which one would be the best. I have heard these linear cables are good but I don't know the difference with these cables and standard cables. Can anyone suggest anything to me with a reason? thanks
Skoze
Any cable will be alright if you lube it up nicely. I've got linear outers with gt85 sprayed down them and clark's inners from halfords with a fair bit of grease on 'em atm, Plenty smooth enough and have stretched very little (having used the same inners on both my bikes over time)
fatwomble
Cheap cables off ebay have always done me ok, as suggested above, keeping them lubed helps.
Luke Rainbird
Spending a couple of quid on some Linear outers that'll last you for years isn't a massive expense for the benefit so I'd suggest doing that, but when you replace the inners anything will do really. As said, lubing it all and setting it up properly can make a huge amount of difference so take some time to do it right and you'll be onto a winner

CC12345678910
could someone explain the difference between a 'linear' cable and a standard one like my well lubed wilko one. And the perfomance benefits of course...
Luke Rainbird
A standard brake outer is effectively a coil of metal with a plastic outer. A linear cable is much like a brake outer, in which multiple strands of metal run the entire length of the unit. A normal cable will tend to kink or crush a little when it's made to go round a tight curve, where as a linear cable won't which leads to a smoother operation over a wider range of circumstances. Not essential, but a worthwhile uprgrade for the sake of a few quid for a couple of years
Matt Vandart
ther is also less compression of the outer as far as i am aware which leads to a more solid feel.
