Building Up My New Marino (Still 24" S-T)

EDIT: CURRENT BUILD ( V4):

changes:

went back to 25.4 handlebars, because i realized i like the elasticity (i won't like the face plant as much, but hopefully that won't happen without notice)

went ffw again, i realised i REALLY missed the weight distribution. running 17/12 now which feels great for street-trials (similar to 22/16)

lost the brake booster and i can't say i notice any difference

lost the front brake and i really enjoy it like this. i rode brakeless a few months before building this setup and i missed the smoothness and the simplicity so i went halfway and kept the rear brake only which i tend to use as little as possible

got the echo fork back on (it's a bit shorter and i like the geo better, plus marino's fork was is a bit asymmetric which bugs me)

put on a kenda k-rad on the back as well and i love it. holds well enough for trials and it feels great at street stuff and cruising around

also changed my previous grips (which were slim lock-ons with an outer layer of tennis grip) with trialtech foam ones. it's cool they're so light, and they are actually tough, which is surprising, they also stay put, which also is also surprising, but they do feel a bit more "fluid", yet not enough to be annoying, so it's all good...

that's about it. i think i'll keep this setup for a while since i really enjoy it

the tensioner works well nice so far

EDIT: PREVIOUS BUILD (V2)

changed some drive train stuff and handlebar/stem.

have the 23T trialtech sprocket and a bashring i locally build for around 12gbp.

bashring is 84g, 6mm wide, 110 exterior diameter so that it can adopt a 24t sprocket in case some manufacturer decides to build them.

chain tension is so far ok, but will loosen soon enough. i'll probably try a spoke tensioner first.

didn't get a chance to ride it since it snowed. will have to see if i get along with front vees this time around...

INITIAL POST:

right, so here are the first pics of my upcoming build.

if everything goes well, tomorrow i'll have a fully functional bike.

here's what i asked for:

(the wrapping shape of the spoke was his input, i'll go with the "laid" shape

bummer.

didn't have much luck with the chain length. it's slack as hell. i would need a double wheel tensioner to accommodate this length. if i put a half-link in, i will probably get away with a single wheel tensioner, but i don't think a spoke tensioner would do the trick...

damn it.

Can always try the half link then. Its an old looking chain. What about trying a new one?

How is the clearance on the cranks and brake?

yeah, i will put a half-link on, and see from there on.

the chain is actually brand new, it's just a shady pic.

the cranks clear the brake arms fine

thanks for answering

Mega short rear end? Looks pretty compact. Not fan of the colour but am interested to see when finished.

[edit]

Should of looked at the first pic. 378mm. Looked a bit shorter. Though the wheelbase is short!

bike is pretty much finished (just needs some wheel truing and such)

i'll make some pics tomorrow, since my camera doesn't do so good in artificial light.

until then, here's how i resoled the tension problem:

first i got a tensioner similar to this one in order to find out it doesn't fit (the fixed arm is too short to accomodate 18T). fortunatelly i can return it.

i then put a half link on and thought of ways to tension it. the slack was too big to use a spoke, so i made this:

post-13202-0-73779900-1291836275_thumb.j

the metal plate can move around the axis, because the bolt that goes into the vee mount that is on the chainstay is tightened by the nut that seats between the mount and the plate

post-13202-0-94110700-1291836273_thumb.j

it doesn't show in the pics but i have about 4 mm of clearance between the chain and the chainstay

seems to work... only went out to test it for a few minutes..

Yeah.. like it! Loving the initial spec list, great use of tools right there.

Can you run 22t on those cranks? You could have a play with gear ratios to achieve a neater chain tension (if you really wanted). This'll be of some use; http://www.machinehead-software.co.uk/bike/chain_length/chain_length_calculator.html

Mike, he's running a rear free wheel. So hes limited to what ratios he can run. I don't have to tell you that! :P

I don't really like the colour, might be better in the sun light?

What I am loving though is, the fact that Marino is producing sweet ass frames that have different ways of keeping the ol'chain tight.

looks awesum

thanks, mate

i can run 22, but i like this ratio better (24/18= somewhere between 18/14 and 18/13). 23/18 would be cool also (same as 18/14), but i don't know ant 23T chainrings for 4 arm cranks. 22/17 would be similar, but i don't want to invest in another freewheel atm (plus there aren't many options with 17T).

oh, and cool link, thanks!

the color isn't that different in sunlight, but i do like it quite a lot the way it is.

the chain tensioner idea was actually mine, marino just implemented it.

don't know about sweet ass, i would have a few complaints...

I didnt say it was his idea. The eccentric idea wasnt his either, or mine for that matter...But he did build the frame to your spec.

Did you give Marino feedback on the frame if you werent happy?
