Boswell
I was sleeping the other day but some part of me must have been alert as I felt semi concious but still felt paralysed unable to move. Being in this state was rather relaxing until I became restless, I tried to wake myself but was unable to regain full conciousness or move! Eventually I did wake but during this experience I actually contemplated if I was dead which obviously really scared me, has this ever happened to you? "In addition, the paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger." Also I imagined a man in my room whom I considered a threat but was unable to move to protect myself! Keep the comments coming people this is very interesting. thanks. Possible Reasons Sleeping in a face upwards or supine positionIncreased stressSudden environmental/lifestyle changesA lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode.Excessive consumption of alcohol coupled with lack of adequate sleep All of the above also fit as I am a fresher! Boswell
Not the only one then, this was possibly one of the scariest things ever to happen to me! Kind if felt like I had entered purgatory(if there is such a thing). Bronz
Yeah had a few. The worst one was probably the most recent: Work up in my girlfriends bed to see her room full of laughing kids putting up paper decorations. Weird thing was the kids were only stood where there was available floor-space as if 'they' (I use the term loosely as they obviously weren't there) had spacial awareness. So yeah I couldn't move but I was just frozen watching these freaky laughing kids (you know the stereotypical kids-giggling-sound you get in movies?) hanging up these home made paper decorations all around me until I saw some f*cking ugly old woman walk in to the room and join them! Freaked me the f*ck out, that did.

Revolver
It's called sleep paralysis, and one common event for people suffering this is seeing some dutty witch woman come into your room and sit on your chest and try to throttle you. Course, it's a hallucination, it just shits you up because you're still breathing really shallow breaths like you do when you're asleep. ellingtj
I get this style of event often and manifests itself as essentially waking up in my dream. I wake up, I look round the room, it's my room but I had this sensation before so I know something isn't right, the physics isn't correct, I now know I'm actually still partially asleep. The event will then take two routes: 1. If I'm really on the ball I will be conscious enough to think -right we're still asleep, stay calm or you'll wake up and it'll take hours to get back to sleep (I'm generally a bad sleeper). I'll then go back to sleep fine. this is the less common outcome. Usually, 2. I think "shit!" I've got to wake up, panic in my sleep, become acutely aware I can't move my body, bad stuff starts to happen in this level of dream and then spend the next minute or so straining to wake up into reality - big relief when I do. Happens weekly. This is the reason I found the film Inception captivating as I regularly have dreams within dreams. Remember Don't Panic! 1a2bcio8
isnt this the same as a trance? ive listened to meditation audio before and it puts you in this state, its awesome Dave, have you tried the hemi-sync stuff? It's good. The purpose is to evoke an out of body experience. Highly recommend it I've had the experience of waking up with paralysis. I could only move my head so I looked up, saw a figure walk past my window, said "Mum?" and then went back to sleep. Being a 14 year old and well into the x-files at the time I thought maybe I'd seen an alien

1a2bcio8
Elaborate ben? im intrigued? Well, it's a collection of progressive meditations that teach you a type of awareness for having certain kinds of experience such as "out of body" experiences. It's lead by a chap whose name I can't remember (maybe robert manroe?) but was very established in that community. I've had out of body experiences and if you're interested in that sort of thing I really recommend giving it a go. They are really fascinating. It's not easy mind but can definitely be done with persistent practice. Search out hemi-sync anyway. Expensive to purchase but there are other ways of obtaining them...
