Xbox 360 Steering Wheel

As the weather is getting bad and I will be doing very little riding it looks like I'm going to be on my xbox the whole time :giggle: And after a whole weekend of playing racing games I thought I would buy a steering wheel :) I was looking at two wheels the official xbox one and the mad catz one, has anyone got one? Are they worth the money? Are they very responsive? If anyone has any suggestions on a different wheel please tell me :)

Thanks in advance Kieran.

I've got the official xbox one. The reviews seem to say it's about the best you can get for the xbox (though apparently the PS3-only Logitech one is better?). It looks like a very well-made piece of kit, clamps onto a desk really securely and the leather steering wheel feels really nice, just like the one in my car really. Paddle shifters work perfectly. It's also got grooves in the bottom so you can use it on your lap but that's a waste of time IMO, it moves about a lot - you need a table for this one. There's no clutch pedal, so there's no heel-toe training. If you want to use clutch, you can set it to the X button in Forza but that just feels a bit stupid. Also handbrake is A which again doesn't feel right - I find it very hard to drift with the wheel. The other stupid thing is that although it's "wireless" (I.e. you don't need a wire going to the xbox), you still need to plug it into the mains if you want the force feedback or vibration.

The steering is perhaps a bit light until the force feedback kicks in, but when it does, it resist you nicely. For most cars, the force feedback is on (to varying degrees) all the time. In fact, the resistance does actually stop you going where you want to go sometimes, and it takes a split second longer to overcome the resistance and correct your line. Which is good I guess, but it means your lap times could potentially be slower than with a normal pad (although I suppose if you're that bothered you can turn the force feedback off). For normal fast driving (as opposed to drifting) it feels pretty damn good. I've only used it with Forza 3 (front bumper view) and I can't really fault it - it makes the game so much more immersive.

The only problem is that it's a lot of money for something that might get boring. I haven't used mine for months...

Unfortunately Microsoft have it pretty locked down, so only the Official Wheel and the Mad Catz wheel will work.

Between the two, I'd say the Official Wheel has the Mad Catz wheel beat hands down. It's far nicer build quality and finish just make it a better buy. My only complaint was it only had a 270 degree turn and as it got older the motor got rediculously loud.

I actually sold mine a while back because I was stone broke, but it really was a good laugh with games like Forza.

They are awesome, if you can get hold of one. Xbox 360 compatable Fanatec wheels were limited run and there was a waiting list before they even launched.

Then bare in mind the price you see on the website, is only for the wheels, pedals are sold separately, and you're pushing it well past the sunday racer end of the budget.

Currently playing F1 2010 with the Mad Catz MC2 wheel and have no major complaints. That could well be because I've never used another wheel with the xbox. The force feedback isn't amazing but it's decent enough. I only got it because it was the only one I could get through my littlewoods account!

Bit of a bump... Seems the 'Official' wheel is now discontinued (hence it being out of stock everywhere and 2nd hand ones going for silly prices) - anyone know of another option? Looked at the MadCatz one but the reviews have put me off a bit... Something that feels 'chunky' is probably what I'm after, nothing too wishy washy that feels like you have zero resistance/control.

Managed to pick up a 2nd hand one for a beasty price :D Only played with it briefly so far but seems ok...

Made a stand at the weekend which has helped (wheel on your lap with pedals shifting around sucks), but needs more brake pedal resistance (squash ball behind the pedal) and I would like more force feedback (but I doubt I'll get that without spending megabucks!).

It allows you to drive in-car and still have some sort of idea what the back end is doing though, which is cool. Certainly more fun that with the pad but definitely harder (at the moment til I get used to it!). You defo need to keep all your inputs smooth and 'real' rather than ragging on the controller which is cool.

It's a shame Microsoft haven't brought out anything spectacular. I've got a pretty good Logitec wheel which works on PC and PS3, but ofcourse they don't work for the Xbox. At the moment PS3 is well ahead with the wheels available.

Maybe when Forza 4 is released they might have a new wheel out. It's a bit odd that they discontinued their previous wheel though.
