Luke Dunstan
Just rode back from town, thought i'd hit up an easy gap that's on my route and my chain snapped. Luckily only my pride was hurt It was a Trialtech Z610 HX. Does anyone know how much freezing temperatures could affect the strength of a chain? and also recommend me one that can take 14 stone and will be reliable. I don't care about weight, strength is key. Cheers guys.
Nick Manning
I'm 14 stone and using the Trialtech (KMC) chain, mines be sweet, running it for a few months now. Might just be bad luck. I did use a KHE Collapse chain before, only ever snapped it once, and that was due to me landing on it, just behind the bash ring, was pretty heavy impact, so no surprise it broke. As for the weather, can't help you there, but I'd be surprised if it effects the chain performance and strength.
MK999
In regards to the freezing temperatures... a lot! Dip it in liquid nitrogen (-200 plus whatever it heats to while you're setting up the test rig ) and the strength of steel drops to less than a 10th of its original, okay that's a tad colder than your british winter but you get an idea of the scale I wouldn't be surprised if you lost a good 10-20% of the strength at 0 to -
Jamie_Trials
I know people say change your chain every 3 months or something like that but. Years on end my KHE Collapse, 1/8" has never failed me. Tarty don't stock them at the moment but they're well worth it
SamKidney
If weights no problem then a Gusset tank chain is my choice of chain, Run it for about half a year, looks beast, very strong, and never had an issue withy it. Always keep you chain lubed up and you should have no problem
Ali C
how old is the chain out of interest?
Luke Dunstan
how old is the chain out of interest? Couple of weeks, ridden twice I think. snapped two links away from the split link.
mat hudson
i've always used the KOOL chains with no problems, they seem to be pretty strong, never snapped one on my trials bike, but i'm a bit out of the bike parts loop so dont know of anything newer that might do the job better. oh yea and probably best not to use the split link, they're shite. Azarathal
thats the problem He said it snapped near the split link, not the split link itself.
Rusevelt
Shadow Conspiracy V2 halflink, or Wippermann bmx 1G8. The shadow will more give flexible chain length and less prone to stiff links, where as the Wippermann is just brute strength, stiff links from time to time but will never break. Not sure what tank of a chain Damon Watson is using, but it looks very simular to a Wippermann.
N.Wood
Shadow Conspiracy V2 halflink... ..Is the weakest chain I've ever used. Are your links snapping in half or splaying apart?
Kenny--Trials
Not sure what tank of a chain Damon Watson is using, but it looks very simular to a Wippermann. I swear i read somewhere that he is using a motorcycle chain.

snowy= leicester trials
khe collapse is the strongest i know of , i had a kmc chain that looked alot like a motorbike chain just ridiculas weight , but for peice of mind was good, ive recently came back on the scene and i cant believe riders are putting weight over strengh , ithier people are not pushing there self anymore or just got some serous conhoneys and dont care less if there chain snaps and eat pavment with there pearly whites! Ali C
I have a relatively light Trialtech Lite chain and I am yet to snap one. Ride technique plays a big roll I think. Some riders stamp on the pedals and sometimes don't have the correct technique so rely more on pure power to get the job done (not accusing the topic maker or anyone else of this). If you work on technique more and being softer on the pedals, you will generally snap fewer chains.

N.Wood
Ahh... See in my eyes thats from a bad join rather than the strength of the chain. Easy to do a bad join, just sayiin thats a likely cause
craigjames
What's your chainline like?
Matt Burrows
Ahh... See in my eyes thats from a bad join rather than the strength of the chain. Yeah I agree. The fact it split 2 links from the split pin seems wierd... did you shorten it too much and then have to add some links in or something? Mark W
Poor chain-line killed most of my Kool chains back in the day - since getting my chain-line better I've been relatively fine. Much more of a fan of the Z510 or Z610 instead of the K710 or K810s, primarily because of the lack of stretch. And yeah, I'd agree with what Ali and Nick have already said

I think this has to do with it.Im also a big dude.im 6foot 3 and weigh 110kg I used to get a few hours out of kool chains, snapped 3 times in one day. Ive tried every sort of strong chain. I was sick of breaking chains so i got the khe collapse chain(prone to stiff links) used them for ages, probly 1.5 years. Never snapped one, just replaced when got to many stiff links. when i build up my new bike, becuause i was making it lighter i opted for a lighter chain, now rocking a kmc 510hx and its going strong. been using the same one since august with no issues, also using on on my brakeless bike. I found that i was consentrating on my feet work alot more and not being as brutal it became second nature and my riding has gotten better im not really killing chains like i used to. FWIW i still use the joining clip(due to sucking at joining chains.) ive never had any issue with the join.ive always snapped my chains away from the joint.
