that's why I like them, plus you don't need batteries.

Been playing Skate 3 recently and there are hundreds of combinations you can do without needing more buttons. Not really into fps on consoles as they get owned by PCs, but perhaps more buttons could be handy then.

To be fair, it does run off a battery and needs charging. If anything it's slightly worse as if the xbox recharegable pack goes flat you can stick some AA's in and keep going without a cable.

I do prefer my xbox controller for size though as i have quite large hands so it sits a little nicer. Though i'm sure there's a thrid party ps3 controller somewhere that is aimed at bigger hands. In fact, i may actually look into that today.

Any unofficial Ps3 controller pretty much. Mates got one and feels like I need three hands to hold it securely.

I would rather plug in a cable for a couple of hours while playing than buy batteries.

I like the blu ray player too.

I don't like how loud my ps3 is though, the fan makes a right racket.

All of the PS controllers from day one have been too small for my hands to comfortably hold, I dont even have big hands!

For our xbox controllers we use a rechargeable battery pack with a docking station, they need charging something like once every couple of weeks or so with normal use; it only takes a second to switch over to a fresh battery pack if one goes flat, works really well.

The controller argument is moot, you're going to like the controller you use the most. I loved the original XBox controller, that got changed after a few months because it was too big. I have no problem with the PS3 controllers because I use my index fingers on L1/R1 and my middle fingers on L2/R2. And nothing beats a mouse and keyboard.

I think the issue with the PS controlelr for me is its not wide enough, my hands just feel cramped. Also loved the N64 controller, it just worked for me :)

+1 on the mouse and keyboard!

How old is your Ps3? Mine was getting on for 3 years old when it got the YLOD.

So I took it all apart as per this pic:

An unbelievable amount of dust was inside, literally like a Guinea pigs (a big one) worth in term of volume. When I put it all back together it was silent like when I first got it.

How hard was it to take it apart? I don't wanna do it then get completely lost and just have to f**k it off. I thought I might have to buy a new one because it's making so much noise, but if cleaning it out could fix the problem I might just do it.

Depends how good you are with taking stuff apart! I watched a video on YouTube as I did it. Which was very handy as it was pretty much step by step.

It's quite a lengthy process but everything comes apart once you unsrew one thing, then that will give you access to another thing to unscrew.

You will need some thermal paste if you do take it apart though.

If you don't have YLOD too though you don't get the little semi boner from seeing it come back to life :( Was such a glorious moment. I sold it on the following week though just incase it broke again.. lol

I bought my ps3 pretty much solely for the blu ray player. I've only used it for blurays a handful of times but it's really had it's worth from MGS4, uncharted 1&2 and resistance games. I got infamous with the welcome back package so i'll be looking to finish that sometime soon.

Mines really quiet, until i switch it off. Then it cracks and snaps as the case cools down again.

Nah, the handle bits aren't long enough. My thumbs are constantly at a steep angle to stay on the sticks and i end up with thumbache after a few weeks of use. I need a grip extender or something. The dual shock fitted me fine as a kid, but it hasn't really changed since then and unfortunately my hands have :(

I love the PS3 pad and definitely prefer it to Xbox, but before this I've had PS1 and PS2 so that probably plays a part in my preference, the only thing I don't like about the PS3 pads is the triggers, gonna a grab a pair of 'real triggers' to see if they're any better, but attempting to use a trigger makes me nearly drop the pad every time.

I think the PS3 vs XBox thing for me is won by the fact the sticks on the PS3 controller are at the same level, which means you can co-ordinate movement much easier. I find XBox controllers to be a bit of a mind f**k at times.

I could understand that if it actually worked like that. I can't think of a single game where the sticks have to be moved in the same way at the same time. There's only really shooters that use both sticks simultaniously and they perform different actions, so stick placement isn't really an issue after a little time to adjust to it. Besides, i never complained about the layout, only the size.

Anyways, looks like i'm not the only one with this problem and there seems to be plenty of aftermarket ones that i may have a bash with. Amazon seem to have plenty.

May end up just trying these first. Other people said it made it feel a lot chunkier so could be just what i'm after.

How about this then?

I didn't mean you'd be pushing them in the same way, I meant more for directional awareness, if I was strafing perfectly right using the left stick, and wanted to turn left, I could push my thumbs together, if I wanted to look a bit up as well, I'd know to push my right thumb just above my left thumb. It probably is just me being more used to the PS3 controllers, but I can definitely do better on a shooter on a PS3 than I can on an XBox for that reason. I always run like a spaz on most games because of where the left stick in on the XBox.

A lot of people want XBox controllers over PS3 ones because the 360 was the first console that went big, prior to that consoles were still seen as pretty nerdy, the 360 came out and wasn't that expensive and it was during the gaming explosion, the PS3 had a job to catch up considering it's ridiculous price tag and lack of games compared to the 360 on release. So more people have used the controllers for longer. PS controllers have nostalgia with me, so I'll always prefer them, Tomb Raider 2 and Resident Evil, Silent Hill, they just don't make games like that anymore.

The controller looks good, but you'd have to sit at a desk or something, you need a hard surface under a mouse pad. I feel consoles are a social and fun way to play games, PCs are for the hardcore no lifers. Like me :P

Are you the guy that was playing that AC-10 (I think) flight simulator? I've always wanted to get into those, but they've always looked a bit too hardcore. I can beat any nerd on here with my /played on WoW, so don't feel too ashamed :P

Yeah, Im currently trying to learn it :D

It certainly is very hardcore, exact down to every last detail which I actually enjoy; the problem is Ive only ever been a casual flight simmer so whilst performing even simple tasks like an ILS (instrument only landing) is a bit of a chore till I remember a routine practise, practise, practise!

There is a 'game' mode (as opposed to simulation) in DCS A10C but thats like buying a ferrari and leaving it in 1st gear : :giggle:

For me, probably the greatest failing of DCS A10C so far is that it doesnt pander to a newbie pilot at all and expects you to know stuff like exactly what and where the 'ADI heading arrow 1' is, as someone coming into it pretty much blind it can be very daunting but then oh so rewarding when you learn something new :)

ILS is for pussies anyway! Unless you really have a visibility of 10m ;)

I've still got a quite old sidewinder stick but the FF is really quite good, I might upgrade to a yoke so then I can get some rudder pedals as twist grip rudder is not cool especially for crosswinds and aerobatics :(

I'm sorry but that's just a load of rubbish. You do better because that's what you're used to, it's not to do with stick placement allowing "better co-ordination". If the 360 was the first console that "went big", then howcome ps1 sales are higher and ps2 sales are still three times as many? The ps2 that uses the same dual shock controller as the ps3, and that used the same dual shock controller as was released on the original playstation in 1997?

300px-PSX-DualShock.png

300px-PlayStation3-DualShock3.png

The Dual shock controller has been around for almost 14 years. The original xbox has only been out for 10 years. So 4 years longer and over twice as many sales.

I did say that it was probably due to what I was more used to. But two parallel sticks would definitely allow you to co-ordinate movement, as one stick gives you a reference to the other stick.

I didn't do research I just made assumptions. But when I got my PS2 and XBox, both on release, no-one else had them and even those who did they weren't gamers like me. I'd like to see UK sales as opposed to Worldwide ones to be honest, because some countries have completely different cultures to ours. And seeing as this is a majority UK forum it would be more representative of what we choose. Because from what I could from a quick search, they are massively different ratio wise.

But you don't need a reference to the other stick as they work independently of each other. Surely if what you said were true nobody on an xbox would be able to aim while strafing. It just clearly isn't true.

There is no accurate and up to date information on uk sales floating about. We aren't a big player in the gaming world. PS controllers are designed for smaller japanese hands, xbox ones for larger western hands. That's just the way it is.
