Danny Macaskill: Way Back Home

Pretty much the same as all of his other videos but different locations n slightly bigger. Ive lost interest in his style he mainly gives of a bmx style with a slight bit of trials which makes the public think our sport is bmx. Say what you want but thats just my oppinion. Keep it up though x

It makes a very small minority of people think it's BMX, but how does that even matter? The only people I've heard saying stuff like that are people who aren't ever going to be riding (and don't have any interest outside it apart from seeing his old video on Youtube) - so how does that make any difference? On the other hand, I've spoken to countless people on the phone who've been thinking of getting into trials after watching Danny's old video, and they've bought all manner of bikes from Inspireds to Onza 20" complete bikes to custom spec'd 26" bikes and so on. I haven't ever, ever had a call from anyone saying "Oh, I saw an amazing video of Gilles Coustellier riding. I really want to get into trials now!", in much the same way that I haven't heard it about any other rider in the UK apart from Martyn. Danny's got more people into trials than any of the 'real' trials riders have, and he also helps people in other disciplines of riding get into it when they realise it doesn't have to be strategic dabs, skinsuits and stopwatches. In all honesty, I'd sort of prefer having people seeing this video where someone's trying something new and appearing to enjoy themselves doing it, compared to people strategically dabbing through sections at the worlds, then raging if they don't make a move...

...mainly because I don't reckon they were done on a boom but actually just post production on a zoomed out shot

I'm pretty sure they were 'real'. I know he's got a dolly setup and some other bits and pieces, and I'd imagine they'd have hired some other bits 'n' pieces if they'd needed to get those shots. The whole video was very carefully researched when Danny was injured for such a long time, so they knew what they were doing and had it all planned out before they set off for the most part. You don't get videos this good just by chance...

Thats what proper trials is though, the whole word "trials" is "pogoing" around on the back wheel. Trials is gilles , neil t , vince. taps, gaps, sidehops. natural rock riding...without a seat. Danny mac is NOT trials and i just wish people could see that! Whens a front flip or back flip ever been trials!!!!!

So all the original trials riders riding around on old Montys, Schwinns, etc. which had seats weren't trials bikes? When the two Martins got loads of people into trials riding their Cannondale/Giant frames they weren't riding trials bikes? Chris Doney's natural video from a couple of weeks ago on his Because with a seat wasn't trials either then? The lines I saw Ali do last night weren't trials because he's got a seat on his Hex? Putting meaningless labels on things doesn't really help anyone. Equally, if we're talking about what 'real' trials is, then most of the videos on here aren't - just TGS riding isn't trials. Doing one individual move ad infinitum in a video isn't trials. The whole point of trials is negotiating objects and doing different things, which to me doesn't really mean doing on-off sidehops at a selection of walls to show how high you can go. Danny showed a wider range of (better developed too) trials skills in this video than most other 'normal' trials video on here as he used a load of different techniques to get onto/over/down a load of different objects on natural and street - e.g. ups to fronts, hooks, sidehops, backhop gaps, rolling gaps, bunnyhops up stuff, pedal ups, gaps to front, sidehop gaps, etc.. He just also happens to be able to frontflip, tailwhip and backflip too. I don't really see how doing some other things as well make it suddenly not trials - the only thing it makes that video isn't just trials.

I didn't mean for that to sound like it was a dig in the slightest. If I was gonna be doing those sorts of pans I'd definitely use a zoomed out shot and do it in post. Obviously not if it was to be displayed on a cinema screen, but when it's a web video then you can afford to lose the pixels by overframing each shot and experimenting later with which direction the pans should go, how fast, etc. Either way it didn't bother me the first 6 times watching the vid, so it's not like it's actually a problem, and it's only a very minor gripe as I said.

Hell, you know enough of me from here - if I'm not criticising then it isn't me!

A question to all the "if u wanna ride bmxy buy a bmx" brigade if you think danny is just bmx on a trials bike, do you give as much shit to riders on hardtails doing manuals and bar spins? Do shout at them "buy a bmx!"? Bet you dont. The real issue with alot (not all) of you TGS riders is this pure jealousy! And attack of the green eyed monster prehaps?

Firstly, a massive well done to everyone behind this video. It looked great, songs were "okay" and the riding spoke for itself but above all it made me want to go out on the bike and have fun!

While i think there may have been a slight overuse of the panning footage, i think that a lot more videos need to put some thought into the filming and this should be a bit of a kick up the back side to get people into thinking about it. Too many videos are just the camera in front of the person and then going to the next clip. I went out on sunday and just had a laugh with the camera and the way i was filming and i had a massive amount of fun, as did boumsong (he was being the guinea pig).

Secondly, major  at all the bickering in this thread. It could only be on trials forum. It's a shame so many people are so narrow minded. Danny rode his bike over obstacles without bailing, that's the entire point behind trials riding. Sure it has other obvious influences from other riding styles but that just makes it more 'well rounded'.

This whole disagreement is similar to the debate as to what we 'should' eat as humans. (Bear with me..)

The questions to consider are 'what is human/trials' and also at which point did we start considering ourselves human/trials riders.

Going back through Darwin's theory, what we 'should' eat are plankton. But we've evolved since then, we're not swimming around the oceans. We adapted to then eat more plant matter, so is that the answer? How about when we learned to survive largely on meat? In modern times, where society has evolved much faster than we have, the bulk of most modern diets now consists of simple or processed carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, bread and pasta.

Picture trials being what we eat. (For many of us this is pretty much the case!) Whereas I might love to live on fruit, nuts and the occasional chocolate soufflé, others might prefer a huge bowl of pasta. It's still food, it still does its job, but completely different!

For me, bicycles in general are about getting from A to B, with more quality, grace or efficacy than we could on foot. Trials seems to be the category that doesn't involve big distances, big hills, skateparks or dirt jumps.

For all those constantly whining about this and that not being trials, pay some thought to where it came from. Remember that trials existed long, long before people even knew what a sidehop was.

The point is that trials is about skills on a bike, or as Giles Wolfe puts it in MAD shows 'Balance, Precision, Control and Power'. There's no questioning that the skills learned in trials are an awesome base for dirt jumping, downhilling, XC, road, bmx, or anything! Not to mention the other skills that can come with it like photography, videography, design, business or even socialising.

TGS riding can be awesome to watch, but sorry guys, it is not all trials is.

Love the music, love the shots, love the locations, love the riding. Brilliant!!!

With regards to the panning shots, I really like them, they showcase the backdrops for the riding brillantly. I do think they are being slightly over done now in biking vids in general (just watch any VOD on Pinkbike and you will know what I mean) but in this case they just worked really well.

Good work Danny and Dave!

On the slightly annoying side thread

I have a feeling (this maybe completely wrong) that many of the "Danny Mac isn't trials" supporters are maybe from the younger generation of riders who started riding on seatless bikes with long wheel bases and high bb's and do not fully appricate the origins of trials riding and how it has developed over the years. which is completely understandable If you have only ever watched vids from the current crop of top trials riders how would you know any differrent.....?

On the Flip side....

I think for many of the older guys on this forum who started riding back in the day on mountain bikes with the seat lowered and the toe clips taken off find its easier to appricate and relate the moves Danny is doing as trials riding. Back in the day we would spend hours learning G-turns, Switsland squeekers, backwards nose wheelies, 360 spins and drop offs, mimicing Jeff Lenosky, Libor Karas, Ryan Leech, JJ Gregorvic, Edd Tounge, Chris akrigg and Petr Kraus from old VHS copies of Reed Merchats finest work. (If you are too young to know what a VHS is, ask your Dad).

I think Danny's riding is a evolution of the old school!! :) and I find it fantastic to watch and really apprciate the time and effort that when into making this film for everyone to enjoy!

Haven't been on here for ages but thought this video warranted a trip back! Awesome video, I do agree with Matt and others that it didn't have as much of a 'pow' factor and the explosive moments of epicness that April 09 did but that doesn't take anything away, it's just a bit of a different style. The editing I thought was awesome, scenery was fantastic. I did wonder for a few moments if Dave Sowerby had done it or if he'd been nudged to one side but it was good to see him credited at the end. Though it was a but 'Akriggy' with some of the moves and terrain but again that's no bad thing.

As for the Trials = TGS argument, some people here clearly didn't start riding trials on DS1's and Trailstars loaded with yellow mags and D521's. If trials riding has seriously deteriorated to just 3 moves then i'm not missing much by the sounds of it. Show me some 360 drops, rolling hops and interesting lines any day of the week.

This is an evolution of the riding that got me on a bike all those years ago when the trials kings were at large. If people like CLS, Nezzer and Danny Foster hadn't gone massive with "TGS" stuff then this is how everyone would still be riding on the streets. And even back then "TGS" riders threw in stuff like X-ups, squeakers and can-cans to make stuff look cooler.

There are loads of people who are gonna slag this video off. Ive even seen it posted on a bmx site and people are still saying ( why doesnt he just get a bmx) Why shud he?

Its because he can do these tricks on a mountainbike. Not every person on a bmx cud do all those moves, jumping from one rooftop too the next.

This is a New kinda riding. Hes riding a 24inch trials bike, Eddie tongue was the first to start riding one back in the day till he retired from trials.

Ive even ridden one for years myself and still am, then danny came along riding a prototype inspired frame. Since riding for Inspired hes started to push his style and imagination to the max.

This is where ive always wanted 24inch trials to go, more bmx and slopestyle.

I say welldone Danny, you've made it another step forward in trials. (Y)

Again I disagree with the drops, he looks out of control to me, however im also not a fan of massive drops (personally, because they are painful). I also aint sure your reasoning makes sense. He still lands back wheel down. There is no difference to a tgs rider landing back wheel down, it’s the dropping both wheels for a few milliseconds. It doesn’t make any sense to me at all. I might have to give it a go and see if it does make any difference…thinking about it, I can only think that it might be that your legs stay more relaxed for the majority of the drop, so the shock loading when you land isn’t as painful…meh. I think both of our reasons are stupid and it is just because dan is a tard.

What does everyone think about his drops? Why do you think he does that dropping with the bike flat for a portion of the drop then quickly going to back wheel?

Most BMXers doing big drops do them in that sort of way too, or just land it to two wheels. On my BMX I generally did them like that too, just felt like I was a bit more in control of where the bike was/my body position.

EDIT: Worded that last bit like a mong, hopefully it made sense...
