Azarathal
Heya guys, I'm starting to worry a little about my bike, every now and then I'll hear a crack coming from my freewheel area, there's no skip when it happens, my chainline is perfect, tension is decent etc etc. Any clues as to what might be happening? Matt Burrows
BB bearings would be the obvious one, assuming that everything is tight and well greased etc.
Azarathal
BB bearings would be the obvious one, assuming that everything is tight and well greased etc. Everything is tight, well greased, runs smoothly e.g. no grinding in the bearings. Luke Dunstan
How's the chain wrap?
Mark W
Everything is tight, well greased, runs smoothly e.g. no grinding in the bearings. I've blown BB bearings before, and just spinning the cranks didn't make anything happen, but every now and again (when I was putting load through it), the broken bits of bearing would get momentarily stuck between the correct balls then pop through, making a 'crack' noise. Only way I could tell was by taking the cranks off and spinning the spindle by hand. Even then it was hard to tell the difference from when they were broken and when they weren't.

This^ If its definitely not the BB then check the freewheel bearings and the frame for any cracks.
davidbarr
I have this problem as well. I thought it was my freewheel the first time. I was right. The lockring came loose and the cracking noise became more regular. I got a new freewheel and i still occasionally get the noise.
Borat
It is most likely the bb, it's quite old and the freewheel is fine.
dirt jumper jake
check the simple things... is everything tight? if so then its more than likely to be youre BB
Rusevelt
Mark's right about the BB bearings because my Echo BB is doing the same. If your off the bike and spins the cranks back you won't hear anything, but if you trackstand on the bike and pedal the cranks backwards slowly then you should hear the cracking noise with each turn of the cranks.
