matt.price
Hi guys.. Heres the problem.. On my meta VTT2 that i bought recently i cant run a chain without a half link.. When the chain is at its normal length and its tight the chain is too far back in the dropouts and the snail cams dont reach their bolts ! also it wont stay in place! When i take a link out the chain is too short and the wheel is too far forward in the dropouts and rubs against the frame ! When i got the frame i had a 15 tooth sprocket , so i got a 16 tooth thinking it would help .. but no luck.. Do i just have to use a half lin kand be done with it ? ( also how long would a half link last ? and how often would i need to get one to ensure its doesn't break? ) anyone else had a similar problem? thanks loads in advance .. matt Edited November 3, 2010 by matt.price

Mark W
Stan's been running a half-link on his Sky for quite a while now with no problems. I think he's been running a split-link on the 'narrow' end of the half-link to try and make sure it can't pull apart or anything too. For the snail cam bolts - if you put a spacer under the head of the bolt it'll effectively make it wider, so you can run the cam up against the spacer and it should hopefully reach then. I've seen it done in the past and it worked fine.
N.Wood
I dunno why it did it, but I ran a half link (with split link a la Stan as explained above) and the half link sheared in half after just under a month. I refuse to use them now... But then Stan has had good results so maybe I got bad one, or just ride my bike more than Stan rides his Sky
Mark W
He put it in when the Sky was the full-time bike, so it still got a fair bit of usage! Even used for the elite route at a TykeTrial comp 'n' all, haha. You can make a turbo half-link by getting a BMX half-link, taking the 1/8" chain roller out of the male end and putting in a 3/32" roller from your current chain. It means you get a longer pin on the female end, which helps keep things all together nicely. Usually they're a bit stronger than standard MTB half-links too. N.Wood
Fair one - I used the 'try-all' branded one as most of the BMX ones (Shadow etc) have holes in and I've snapped them before. Never had one come apart on me using the split link, though, that seems to work well. Its just the actual link shearing in half. I'll live with a slack chain. Mark W
I think the V1 Shadow chains had holes in, but I think the V2s didn't... the V2s are a lot better - the V1 is just a sort of generic half-link chain whereas I think they sorted most of the V2 out themselves. EDIT: Yeah, it is the V2 that doesn't. Apologies for the shite pic, but most BMX companies don't appear to know how to use a camera... White-on-white = fail too, but hey ho. matt.price
do you reckon a half link every 3 weeks will do? just to be safe?
Mark W
Erm... Maybe? It's hard to say without knowing how you ride, etc. Might be worth putting a spacer under the snail cam bolt head and just using it with the axle a little further back? AdamR28
Which chain do you have? How old is it? Which tyre? We recently set up a VTT2 with 18:15, no half link, new Z610 with a Conti tyre and no problems...
Matt Vandart
This is a very strange problem for Matt. Surely the frame is designed to use a 15 or 16t sprocket. I have been trying to help him on the internet but having not seen the problem in real life I cant get my head around it. He's using TR snail cams which have a fairly large adjustment range and says his chain is about 2 months old, would it have stretched that much? The only thing that concerns me due to Adams statement (18:15) above is that meta have dropped a bollock on this particular frame? It's a very strange problem indeed. The only other thing I can suggest is do what some ZHI frame owners have done to run a 15t sprocket and that is to file the dropout slot a tiny bit longer so that u can remove a link, but probs have to run a thinnish tyre. He seems to be stuck in the classic chain length problem where one set o links is too much either way, which can usually be solved with a sprocket one tooth either side of the one you have. Matt is quite a big chap so I spose he could have stretched the chain in two months.
AdamR28
Well the frame is designed for 18:15, and we have set these frames up successfully with that ratio, so... Depending on which chain it is, 2 months could mean bin time, if it's 3 months then it's defo time for a new one. If it's a Kool, then it will have stretched a lot in 2 months. Matt Vandart
I'm beginning to think that too, are you sure you have only had it for 2 monthsMatt, I find I have chains for much longer than I think.
