Car Subwoofers

not wanting to be a chav or anything but I'm feeling the lack of punchy bass from the 5x7 which is expected from the Vibe something or another.

I'm more leaning towards an active sub underseat option over a proper on because I always have my bike about so I don't want to minimise boot space from an already small car!

I wondered if they're actually worth it? looking at the inphase one as it looks the most powerful (I don't know much about subs but I guess the more power generally the better?)

what do you guys think?

Steve

Don't be fooled by "max wattage/power". It's a load of rubbish. You need to check for RMS Rating rather than Max Rating. The higher, generally speaking the better quality at a higher amplitude will be given. Therefore less likely to distort at higher output.

I had some In-phase components in my Punto and they were awful. Paid £120 for them aswell. I doubt the subs are anything to go for by that.

JBL, Sony, are good. Can't remember anymore atm

Too true.

If I remember rightly It's 'the closer the rms to the max output, the better.' Generally I look for something that can get as close to half the max output, From a well known brand as said above, JBL, Kenwood etc.... all good.

If you only want a bit punchier bass, think about a smaller 10 inch sub about 300 watts and a decent amp around the same.

If you want more thump to the bass, the smaller the better. More 'wob wob wob', go bigger. Or a nice 12 inch to get a bit of both.

Just be careful with an amp with an rms rating more than the sub, or you may blow the sub if the amp gain is too high.

EDIT:

Back onto active subs, They are suprisingly good considering their size, But the correct airspace for a sub can make a huge difference! They just generally cost a fair bit brand new.

I had a 10" pioneer sub in my Scirocco, and I was very impressed with the output, easily enough bass for most people, and a few people were really surprised it was only a 10". It was in a correctly sized sealed enclosure though, which does help, wasn't massive, but wasn't small either (probably around a 14" cube). I was only running it off a 120W RMS sony amp, which was physically tiny, and cost me a fiver at a show. (Sub and enclosure cost me a tenner off a friend laugh.gif).

In the MX-5 there's no space for any more than the 2 door speakers. I'm running Edge components in there, and I'm very impressed with them, loads of bass considering there's only 2 speakers and 2 tweeters in the whole car, and they're really nice and clear too. I did add a square of sound deadening around the speakers which I think helped, but I never tried the speakers without it, so can't say for sure.
