ogre
i need to replace my vee calipers soon, i've had a few different callipers over the last 18 months and have had problems with everything i've tried, the pins in SD7s work loose cheap calipers with the brass bits snap inside and halfords ones don't return smoothly so what're you all running and having more luck with? how are shimano callipers? i don't mind shelling out a few more quid for something good but i don't want ultimates there too much for the amount/level i ride, suggestions please? ogre
i thought they went wobbly at the mounts? (aliC said...) also can you buy the domed washers separately anywhere?
Ali C
ok, my thoughts are.... Avid Ultimates, well, yes they are nice, I like the way they have no wobble, it makes the brake nice and quiet but I found they slightly reduced the bite. There is a big but though, the bearings are fine for handling loads the way they were designed, but not so great once you start to put fore/aft loads, the bearings get damaged and go notchy. this happened to every pair of my Ultimates within weeks. This meant I couldn't get the pads to hit at the same time and made the feel of the brake not as good. they are also quite fat which makes setting up the brake trickier. Shimano XTRs just get so wobbly you may as well have a Magura. Avid SD7s are pretty cool, but as you say you have had problems you may not want to use them again, also like the Ulitmates they are quite fat too. My fave arms were Shimano LX (non linkage). They are dead simple, have steel hardwear and are very slim which gives more room for the pads. I can't fault them.
Endohopper
Shimano has worked best for me , although avoid any of their parralel push variants like the plague , as they rapidly develop play . Even ( older ) XTR is easily outlived by cheapo Deore and feels and performs the just as well . . ...My fave arms were Shimano LX ... That's where I settled as well , although I might give XT a shot . Encountered bit of a problem with the arms protruding far enough to catch / impale my ankles , but solved it by fiddling with the pad's spacers .
