MISTER V
HELLO, I AM JUST STARTING OUT IN MTB TRIALS AT 34 (BORED WITH LIFE). IVE JUST BOUGHT A MAD PHASE 1.3 FOR 90 QUID, IT IS LIKE NEW. IT HAS ALREADY HAD THE REAR BRAKE UPGRADED TO A MAG HS33 WHICH IM TOLD IS A GOOD START AND I NEED TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE FRONT MECHANICAL DISC BRAKE......ANY IDEAS? ALSO WOULD IT BE WISE TO CONVERT TO SINGLE SPEED? CHEERS. DAN.
Topsy
1. thing to do would probably turn your caps lock off, as it seems that you are shouting. 2. About the front brake I actually only know that a hydraulic brake (rim or disc) would be pretty good, which would mean to buy a new one (or a used one in good contition) I've got a Magura Louise and it actually does it's job well, but I haven't anything to compare it with. 3. No idea actually, but I though Trial bikes all were singlespeed. (probably not without reason ) Geoffrey
Miles Mallinson
Yes it would be wise to convert to single speed, find a gear you like on your cassette and count the teeth you can get single speed converters like a gusset, dmr or trialtech, and either get a sprung or fixed tensioner. For the brake i'd stick with a cable disc brake and upgrade your current one to either a Avid bb5 or bb7 and a good solid lever like a Avid sd7. Topsy
When i had cable brakes on my mountainbike they always tore after like 2 months. Luckily nothing bad happend. I never had problems with my hydraulic ones.
Oli P
I would recomend changing the front brake for a BB7 with a larger rotor which will give you more than enough power. Also I found that with the standard rear V and a good set of pads (LGV) and a light grind will give you a far better brake than a magura with evo mounts. Thanks for your input, i think ill go for the BB7 on the front but im going to leave the mag on the back as its already there and seems to be doing its job. Ive been offered some Onza smart guy forks for £40 which im tempted by just to lighten the front end a bit, these will take the disc brake or another HS33, again, which is the better option? Cheers. Don't bother with the smart guy forks, they weigh about 1kg and for £40 you'll get some good condition Echo Urbans off here when validated which are only about 800g so quite a substantial difference. As for the rear brake what pads are you currently running, and have you got a grind on the rear rim as it makes quite a difference in braking power i found!
