JD™
Hey all, Little problem that I hope you can help with. I've got an old Hope headset which came with some thing that goes in your steerer instead of a star nut. Long story short, I snapped the top cap bolt into and there's no way of cutting a line to screw it out so I need some other suggestions. I know there are ways, I've just drawn a memory blank on them Would it be as simple as drilling out more than the bolt and hoping that releases it? PeanuckleJive
Is it that groovy expanding ring type deal that goes inside the steerer? if you can drill the bolt enough so it breaks in half, that whole thing should just fall apart
Luke Rainbird
Easy-outs to get the remaining bolt out?

Yea, if I remember right from putting it in (at least 6 years ago...) it's like a rubber o-ring round a like thick washer inside a washer which somehow expanded when you screwed the bolt into it. The bolt is pretty much snapped as far as it could. I was thinking about drilling a millimetre wider than the bolt and hope that it's just the bolt that expands stuff. Dont wanna do that if it's not going to work though, because the forks I have are sealed at the bottom so there's no 'whack it as hard as you can through the steerer tube' option. Mark W
If you go for a bit the same size as or slightly smaller than the diameter of the bolt, you may be able to get it to catch the bolt and rotate the bolt out itself. Ads had to do that recently when my 'enthusiastic' approach to tightening stem bolts annihilated one of my stem bolts, and it worked really well. Rob Leech
Can you put some pics up of the problem? If you've got it, try using a masonry drill just smaller than the bolt, whack it in a drill and put it into reverse then continue to drill the top of the bolt, putting quite alot of pressure down. Because of how hard the tip of the masonry drill is, it should dig into the bolt, unscrewing it rather quickly. Just be careful that you dont burn the tip of the drill out . This works with milling cutters, but have never tried it with a bolt. Cheers matey, Josh. Edited October 20, 2010 by Rob Leech
JD™
JD was being an idiot and looking at the obvious 'problem' rather than the obvious solution. The top cap bolt which snapped was literally for loading this Hope thingymajig, which actually has a 7mm allen key recess in it to wedge it into the steerer tube. Dur. All sorted, front end wiggle pretty much gone. £5 vs £50 spend makes JD happy. Thanks for your suggestions guys.
