quick_spider
You can pay for tethering (I think via USB cable) through the phone company. Alternatively there are jailbreak apps that allow you to bridge the 3g connection via wifi (phone essentially acts as a wireless router). Does your laptop not have wifi?! It does have Wifi, but I don't want to pay the extortionate fees for a log-on when I get free access to it on the phone. Just want to be able to bridge this through to the laptop. Hopefully we'll have broadband in a couple of weeks when BT pull their finger out so it wont be top of my list.
Tomm
Oh I see. I don't know if you can do that. Well, I don't know if anyone's written the code to allow you to do that, anyway.
isitafox
TV catchup is impressive, but I've never actually found a use for it. If I'm at home (on Wifi), it's more comfortable to watch TV on something else. My favourite app is also a radio app called TuneIn Radio. It's not just BBC radio streams (not sure if yours is?) and it's brilliantly integrated (uses iPod controls/remote control etc). There are two things I use jailbreak for; one is Lockinfo which is brilliant little tool that puts your calendar/diary/new messages/weather onto the home screen. I use it mainly for the diary function, wouldn't want to live without it now. The other is a little program called HandyLight which Apple originally had as a free app in the app store. It's one of those flashlight apps but it has a twist - if you press the exact right combination of buttons it lets you tether your phone via wifi. As soon as Apple realised this they withdrew the app, and now you can only get it via jailbreak. Quality app as it covers local radio as well, love it! quick_spider
It's finally arrived. After much messing about with Greenpoison, I gave up and used limera1n to jailbreak it. Where can I get handylight from? I've got Cydia installed, but I'm not sure which source I need to find it...
Al_Fel
You need to install "Installous". There's guides on youtube to help with that. I don't want to post a link here because its a bit Piratey.

I think I prefer the other tethering apps eg PDANet since you aren't confined to just firefox.

I use PDANet, however downloading it from Cydia means you get the trial version which you can use for a certain amount of time I believe before you have to pay, but if you were too download it from 'Installous' then a few people have modified it so that you don't have to pay to register for the full app. Ofcourse I don't condone anything like that, because you should pay for all your apps and not download them all for free from Installous. Tomm
I think there are better tethering options (mifi?) but HandyLight works well for me and is (genuinely) free. Don't think it's limited to Firefox, I got it to work with Safari on my mac by changing the network proxy settings (again there's a youtube tutorial for this). My current new favourite iphone is SBSettings, with Springfash settings added. It basically lets you turn on the camera flash at any time, from any app or the lockscreen, for an almost instant torch

Need to spend a few hours on importing my SMS's. It seems complicated as I'm not familar with SQLite databases.
l33th3tr33
On the jailbreak side of things, I used Limera1n. Real easy to use, just plug in and click. And another thing is something for facetime, where it tricks the phone into thinking it has a wifi connection, thus allowing you to use facetime over 3g. Can't remember what it was called now. quick_spider
Progress! I've managed to import some dummy SMS's into SMS.db. Not tried to upload it to the phone yet, but will give it a go. Have also extracted SMS's from my old phone - only 15000 of them Gone for PDANet for tethering, although it's slightly academic since Sky/BT have finally pulled their finger out and we have broadband now
Tomm
Perhaps this is a silly question but why do you need to transfer the texts from the old to the new phone?
quick_spider
Perhaps this is a silly question but why do you need to transfer the texts from the old to the new phone? I like to keep my old texts as sometimes it's good to refer back to them (The search is pretty good on the HTC) When (if) I change from the iphone, I'll be able to extract them all and port them back to WM, or into Android. weirdoku
Quick question. On my iphone 3g, on 3.1.3 OS you can play video in slow mo when you press pause then hold the fast forward button. BUT! I can't seem to figure it out of my friends iphone 4 (on OS4 obviously), theres no fast forward button, only the time line up top. HALP! quick_spider
I've successfully imported my SMS's now. Wasn't too bad - needed to Jailbreak to get the appropriate access and accidently upgraded to OS 4.2.1 in the middle of it. All back up and running (unjailbroken) except for my contacts as I've been having issues getting them out of my old phone and into the new one :@
