krazykid009
Hey all My birthday is fast approaching, and from my parents I am getting an Onza Bird 09. I have been asked if there is anything else I would like along with the bike, perhaps to make it lighter or nicer to ride. I am considering going for new forks/stem/bars/cranks and moving the freewheel to the front. Does anybody know the weight of the forks, bars and stem, so as I make sure I choose something that is actually lighter. Thanks James

Thanks James Hello, the forks on the bird are steel, and the bars and stem are aswell. So anything on tarty is considerably lighter, the forks on the standard brid are 1. something kg! Good forks to go for are echo urbans, or echo sl's (which do snap quite easy). But the sl's are the lightest out of the 2.

Does anyone know specific weights as i want to add it all up and see whether or not it is worth spending a couple of hundred on the bike to make it lighter. I've already worked out I can save 300g just changing the cranks with ones I have already, and moving the freewheel to the front. I reckon I could get about 1 and a half kilos in total. If anybody could shed some light as to the weights of the bar, stem and forks on the bike I would be very grateful. Thanks James

konstant
Before you go about trying to save weight, I'd get a FFW setup and possibly a Magura on the back. These are the biggest price related compromises on the Bird.

These are the biggest price related compromises on the Bird. Like I said in my first post, I am going FFW straight away. As for the brake, I love the feel of vees and as soon as I put a decent lever on and a nice set of pads, it'll be fine. It is really the weight that I find an issue so that is why I asked originally. Not trying to be obnoxious or anything, just saying. Thanks anyway James
Luke Dunstan
Where are you getting the Bird from?
krazykid009
Abrasive BMX in Yate, Bristol. It was the last one they had so I got it cheap. Why do you ask?

If you were spending another couple hundred, you might have been better off getting if from Tarty, and I'd imagine they would do you a good deal on upgrading a standard bike. Maybe you're local shop could, would be better buying with upgrades, than buying and THEN getting upgrades if you know what I mean.

The shop only sell the standard stock bikes , but don't stock any parts other than tires and BMX parts ie. freewheels. I have been riding mountain bikes all my life so I am confident in changing the parts over so if I bought the parts separately I could put them on the bike without hassle. I am pretty new to riding trials, I've only had my stock just over a month now, so I'm not too wised up when it comes to parts etc. I just need the weights of the components to be completely honest with you. Are the forks that come on there the same as the Tuf Guys. They are pretty hefty at 1.2kg so if they are an upgrade from the stock ones then they are definitely worth upgrading. Sorry if that confused anyone Thanks James

krazykid009
I was talking money saving, not weight or labour time. O right. I got the bike for £250. I reckon I will spend £200 on parts. The new Bird is £419. Even with any savings I could get from Tarty it would still work out a lot more expensive I'm afraid. Good thought though. Thanks James Edit: I would of course buy my parts from Tarty without a doubt Edited October 4, 2010 by krazykid009

krazykid009
Fook me, bargain mate... nice one Thanks. They had an 09 rip in there for £150 but i thought it would've been cheeky taking the both of them and selling on the rip! So back to topic, anyone know the weights of the stem, bars and forks of the 09 Bird? Thanks James
