Laurence--Trials
Alot of people know.. on the Hope Reservoir caps it says 'only bleed with Dot 4 or 5.1' Why is this? because im wanting to bleed my brake and its a pain in the arse to do because im not fantastic at it and i normally end up getting fluid like everywhere.. so i was wondering why we cant bleed them with water? EDIT: and i dont want stupid answers like learn to bleed your brake better. Edited September 21, 2010 by Laurence--Trials
EchoSam
Hi, You can't bleed any disc brakes with water because they heat up so quickly, so when ever you drag the brake the water would boil and most probably burst your hose/ seals. Hope this helps Sam

Revolver
I bled an avid brake with water once. I never got it onto the bike, it seized up within two lever presses.

Mark W
how? Because the seals are not made to work with water, and would most likely swell up and stop your brake from working. As was said previously as well, disc brakes heat up really quickly - especially the Mono Trial - so you'd run into issues with that almost straight away too, even if your brake actually worked long enough to do anything with it. Either way - it doesn't work, it won't work, it will kill your brake, that's pretty much all you need to know...

N.Wood
They tend to have a 'lighter' lever feel than water bled maguras anyway, so shouldn't need to be done anyway.
Revolver
what? I emptied an avid brake of fluid one time, and replaced it with water. Before I managed to get the brake onto the bike and useable, I pulled the lever twice and found that the lever had seized.
Mark W
The unleaded hoses are always the first hose you get to on the petrol stations around here, so I might put some petrol in my diesel car 'cos it's a bit easier.
315r
last hollidays I had a problem with my front magura louise and the only chance that I had was bleed with water. The feeling It's amazing and still works with water, the only thing that you don't have to do are long downhills. But now I'm a little bit worried about my louise "life" and I have a can of Shimano mineral oil to refill it as soon as possible. This is my experience. For Hope it's another history because hopes use dot Edited September 22, 2010 by 315r

TROYston
Magura Julies work fine with water. though i wouldnt do it with any other brake. Bleeding them is simple work, just need the right tools, a shimano bleed kit is the best but costs like £30.
