isitafox
Right I've just got a First headset from tartybikes yesterday and I'm currently fitting it into my echo but struggling a lot! I've got the cups fitted, all the bearings greased and in with the covers but I don't know where to put the plastic bit! I tried sliding it to the bottom of the steerer so it went in the bottom like in headsets of old but it stuck out a mile so I've swapped it over and slid it onto the top of the headset but it still doesn't look right, HELP!!! Mark W
With the First, the crown race and the top bearing race look pretty similar. The C-shaped washer only fits in the top one, so just see which one it fits flush in and go from there. Just make sure you haven't put the top race on as the crown race
isitafox
I've prob got it all back to front then! Will have a double check and see whats what, this is what happens when I do it at work!
Mark W
Looks like you've got the crown race on top there, I think...
isitafox
Yup thats the problem had them the wrong way round, problem now is how to I get it down onto the steerer as it wont go onto where it thickens at the bottom! Mark W
Long tube that slides over the steerer = best way, but if not, just put the race on the steerer, then get an adjustable and open that up around the steerer tube so it sits on top of the crown race where it's touching the steerer, then give the spanner a hammer. Move it round to make sure you hit it down evenly too.
isitafox
Now I know why I used to stick with FSA's and their luvverly split races!!
isitafox
I can safely say that doesn't want to go on whatsoever! Just stuck with about 3mm left to go, what bizarre part of my mind thought this would be a straightforward job?! EDIT: Problem solved, solution=remove crown race from FSA headset, use instead, job done! Only a temp job anyway till I can blag some vouchers at christmas to get a decent one, unless this does a good job!
