Middleburn & Ff Combo Question

CriminalTrials.co.uk

I believe a while back, I read Alex Dark was designing a mounting system for a freewheel to be run on Middleburns.......

Very much doubt that would work unfortunately, not without a 180mm long BB axle or something...

but they need a new mould which would be too expensive.

Or just to grow a pair and sort it out :P We've asked if they can try with the current tool but they won't do it - I'm convinced there's enough meat in the standard tooling to make it work... If they don't take 2 or 3 threads off with that silly chamfer and cut a bit into the arm it should work...

I agree entirely with Adam, if middleburn did produce a ffw crank all other cranks would be virtually obsolete.

Middle burn cranks are unrivaled in terms of stiffness strength and just awesomeness.

Almost every ride I have been on where someone has middleburns on their bike this conversation starts up not always by me by the way.

What size is the thread on the middleburn cranks by the way?

M30x1.0 I believe, same as the lockring on XTR M950 cranks.

Yes, lifetime warranty, but not against mong-i-ness: 'Warranty excludes tapers, splines and threads. '

But if they did a ffw version there's a good chance it would be the last set of cranks you ever buy. Unless you're a numpty obviously!

That's the same with pretty much any crank though :P

Hmm fair point. but middleburns are imo way above the rest in terms of stiffness and pedal response.

Swapping from middleburns to try alls after riding middleburns for so long (on various bikes, xc, downhill, freeride etc) was like fitting mars bars with pedals on to my bike.

The only ones that have come close in terms of stiffness were echo cnc.

Interesting how people can spot flex in such specific parts of their bikes... Personally, I found my Try-All CNC cranks to be pretty good. I certainly didn't notice them to be 'flexy', but then again I was riding with them on a mod with 20psi or so in the tyre, etc., so there were quite a lot of other bits I noticed flexing more than my cranks.

Oh they are not 'flexy' as such but you can deffinately feel the difference.

In fact if you watch a powerfull rider like Kerr or my mate Dan do static shit you can visibly see the flex which you can't with middleburns.

A few people I have spoken to have also comment to the same effect when changeing to ffw.

No Mark, I do not have macro-vison it is not needed.

Could be the bb twisting I suppose which would make the try alls stiffer, or it could be an optical illusion but something flexes more on the set up than the middleburns and middleburns feel stiffer.

The pedal response is quicker more positive.

Does Ali stay still for long enough to do static power moves? He's always whizzing around like a bee on speed in the vids I have seen ;)

How many times a day do you have to deal with phone calls or e-mails about things people have read on here that may/may not be true?

Good point, hadn't thought o that, but to be fair this is 'Trials forum' an open forum for discussion of all things trials related.

I think I shall test both and conclusively show with quantitative tests which are stiffer ( If I can be arsed/remember), I'm intrigued now as it could be that middleburns are not stiffer but have a level of stiffness that is less likely to create torsional deflection in the bb axle, because as Mark said it would be pretty hard to see the deflection in a crank arm but if it is the bb twisting then that would probably be more obvious and could be percieved as the cranks 'flexing'

That may in fact be the solution to the bb snappage conundrum also. The try alls are actually stiffer than the middleburns.

I would buy a set if they ever make them, i don't think that i could tell the difference between them and any other crank out there, i just want Middleburn cranks because i'm a brand whore :P

Also i'd like a screw on Hope hub to go with my ultra lightweight front hub thats sat in the garage, why don't they make them any more?

Middleburns seem to be pretty badass.....mine are alright, I say theyre about equal to try-all personally.

Middleburns are much stronger in my experience, I was extremely disappointed with my first set of Try-alls. Although in terms of stiffness I thought there was little difference, and there are plenty of cranks stiffer than RS7s.

There was a thread by this dude who works for hope, with PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE of a 116mm spaced screw on hope hub.

Unfortunately, that's the last we heard of it. For some reason, they want to develop bike lights, rather than fulfil advance orders of something like a 116mm pro II trials which could be has been made from a 135mm one.

In my opinion I have ridden burns for around 5 years and compared with the try-all's they have nothing… The try-all cranks are certainly one of Koxx's better products. I personally think they are a lot stiffer and reliable. And this is coming from someone who is not a Koxx fan...
