Luke Rainbird
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm on the lookout for a new rear tyre as I can't stand the dual ply Maxxis I'm currently having to run. From what I can gather the DK/RK tyres are grippy as hell and have the best puncture resistance, but they also seem a fair chunk heavier than a RQ, for example. Is the RQ really that much worse in terms of grip/stability/pinchiness that the extra few hundred grams are worth it? Also, there appear to be a few versions of the RQ - Namely the 'normal one' and a UST version Presumably the UST version will have slightly stiffer sidewalls and better protection, yes? So if the RK/TK/DK tyres aren't an option that'd be the better of the two to go for yes? Cheers for any advice/pointers you're able to give - on one hell of a budget at the mo so can't really afford to go throwing cash in as many places as I'd ideally like, especialy since I'm going to be needing a new frame in the very near future too! Edit; Should I rule out a Big Betty?
Matt Burrows
Conti UST tyres are made in the far east and don't use the black chilli compound, so basically they won't be very grippy. Big Betty isn't as grippy as a Maxxis 42a or RQ but its stability and puncture resistance is somewhere between the two, and bounces better than both. Luke Rainbird
Wicked cheers Matt - I actually managed to get hold of a Der Kaiser just after typing that up last night though Here's hoping the extra weight isn't too noticable... N.Wood
Could whack a lighter tube in there if weight is a problem for you. I won't run anything else other than a RK/DK nowadays.
Rusevelt
Is there anyone here currently using the Trial Queen?
Matthew62
New tyres on their way: http://www.bikemagic.com/gear-news/continental-launch-new-tyres/8979.html

Rusevelt
Apart from you Adam, as we already know that you commented on its performance when you first got them in stock. Edited October 19, 2010 by Rusevelt
N.Wood
Pretty sure Bessel and Mike SIngleton are.
Matt Burrows
And didn't they both puncture them in Porthcawl? From what I have seen of it, it's not really any smaller, thicker or more stable than the RQ which is an all round fail in my eyes. It sounded like it could have been the perfect tyre when it came out but I just don't think the sidewalls are thick enough. Its definitely thinner than my Big Betty, which is a smaller size as well but is still not as stable as I would like.
N.Wood
Word... I think a thinner (2.3ish, actual size not conti size) Rain King/Der Kaiser would be perfect.
Mark W
And didn't they both puncture them in Porthcawl? To be fair though, I think about 90% of people riding in Porthcawl that day got a flat of some description The Trial Queen definitely isn't as good as the Rain King or Der Kaiser in my eyes, but I still think it's a step up from other 'light' tyres people choose to run. N.Wood
I'll put my lack of any punctures down to my bauce Rain King.
Matt Burrows
Yeah yeah, we know how solid they are so you don't need to rub it in! TBF I think I've run it for a year and had less than 10 punctures in the time I've had it. Just I was being very harsh and sketchy that day
