Evenin'

At the ripe old age of 32 I'm thinking about getting a trials bike. As a teenager and into my early 20s I had small framed mtbs modified for a bit of basic trials type riding and had great fun. I'm thinking of something more specific to start messing about on.

It needs to be cheapish with big wheels and I would prefer some sort of saddle.

I'm a long time mtber at heart and am very happy to muck about with tweaking stuff to get a basic new or secondhand bike sorted.

I remember Pashleys being popular in the mtb trials scene back in the day, are they worth looking at secondhand? And then what about the old Orange Zero trials?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Stu.

Hey Stu, and welcome to TF :D

I've got a M.A.D. Phase 1.2, and I loooooooove it!

Doesn't have a saddle, but it's relatively cheap and good value for money.

Also, take a look at www.tartybikes.co.uk (if you haven't already), who pretty much every single rider on here will recommend to you (Y)

Would stay clear of that Onza SpyroGyra though, despite it being cheap and having a seat, it looks shit, and from what I've heard, it is pretty shit.

Best thing to do would be to wait until you're validated and took a look at the For Sale section on full members.

Also submitted a validation vote for you :D

Theres nothing wrong with the spyrogyra for beginners just trying out trials, the frame is well worth upgradeing parts on, but that'll have to go eventually, they are much better value than the 'better ONZA's, Hitman, cleaner etc, which are bollox and have stuff you don't need on em.

Look on Ebay. U can get a spyro way cheaper on there brand new.

If you don't want one of them, and lets face it not many people do, the forks are heavy, the bars are heavy, the cranks are alright, the freewheel must be changed immediately, it's shite, then ebay is the place to be, right now. The bottom has fallen out of the second hand trials market and there are some seriously good deals on there right now (I was looking earlier).

Pashleys are very nice bikes and for the MTB'er dabbling in trials they are perfect. There is one on ebay ATM and it's going cheap.

Ashtons are also a good bet.

This Clik me to see what can be got on ebay for cheap is good.

If your gonna go down the new bike road, look at Deng frames, Zoo, Gu, Echo or and you cannot go wrong with ZHI frames, you wont find them on Tarty but a quick search will find you a seller in Europe and a few in China.

Don't believe the hype these guys are proper traders and you will get your stuff, warranty may be another thing.

I would say steer away from Koxx, Rockman and Monty for now as they are not very forgiving to beginners, but definitely look at them in the future because they are all great frames.

Good luck and be ready to get hooked.

Thanks for the info all. Being a bit impatient I couldn't wait for validation and should have a deal sorted on a secondhand Gu in the next day or so. I'll post back with pics.

The validation thing does seem pretty onerous, I can understand keeping retards and spammers out but what else am I supposed to post about to "earn" my votes? Maybe ask about replacing parts on a bike I don't yet own or riding tips for riding I haven't started doing yet. Does cmfitchett welcome all new users this way??

hmm, you're probably not going to like what I say, but I'll say it anyway,

If you get a GU, it will ride VERY differently to any trials bike you have ever had. It is very long and has a very high bb.

I don't know what level of riding you are at, but if you are just starting again I think the geo of the frame could hinder rather than help. It will be VERY rear wheel bias, you'll be suprised how easy it will be on the rear wheel (so if you live you're life on the rear wheel like a TGS rider you'll get on like a house on fire) but it will be comprimised on other aspects like two wheel balance and you'll have to adjust you're riding style otherwise you will struggle with sidehops, taps and gaps.

If you like to roll about, bunnyhop, spin and generally lark about and still be good for trials, I would reccommend a lower shorter bike. I know someone bad mouthed the Onza Spyo, but I think they are great, dead simple, good frame, good geo (for it purpose) and a good price.

that's my view anyway after 13 years of riding.

Hmm, could make for some interesting riding then. To be fair I've never ridden a proper trials bike. In the past it's been things like a 16" framed mtb with the suspension forks swapped out for rigids and a single ring fitted.

I'll never set the world on fire with my riding but just fancy a go to have some fun when I get an hour spare and pick up some riding skills that I'best over the years.
