Front End Problem

FINDUS

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

The setup is as follows: trialtech forks, zhi z2 frame, chris king headset and trialteck bar and stem.

When all is in place and fitted i tighten the top bolt and then the stem side bolts the headset becomes very stiff when turning from left to right, my first thought was i had over tightened the top cap so tried again but no joy i have now worked out that its not the top bolt but its the stem side bolts this is really confusing as my understanding is the side bolts are to keep the stem in place and not to pull on the forks like the top cap nut.

I have ruled out the headset as used in another frame with the same forks and top cap and that goes for the stem too . so this only leaves the frame :S

Am i missing something here??

are the parts all compatible?

do i need a new frame?

sorry for the simple question its been a hard few weeks and cant seem to get on it :(

I suppose if the headset's not in straight or if the headtube isn't straight then it could cause something like this... but you'd be able to tell both of those quite easily.

Maybe check the race is on straight too.

It also happens if the parts are in the wrong order or if one's missing. There's sometimes a skinny little ring in headsets that mystifies people, or they put the split wedged ring in the wrong place.

All of this seems sort of obvious to me, to notice or to know to check, so I can't imagine it is any of those, but it might be worth a look.

My friend has the same problem, his headset was loose so i tightened it, now its too stiff. Its probably your headset, and just to let you know I don't think you can overtighten a top cap ;)

I dont know if you intended that as some form of innuendo, but regards to headsets you really can overtighten a top cap as it's used for preloading the bearings.

Solves my gramps "front end" problem.

Why did i not think of this! thanks :giggle:

Has the head tube on the frame been faced? If not, that should sort it.

no its not been faced, is it easy to be done or is it best to get the frame sent to you guys to sort?

I have double checked the order of parts and is all spot on. the head set and fork work fine in any other frame! it must be the frame.

Maybe on a basic topcap! but on a trialtech fork its a very chunky bolt and is very easy to over do it! i know i have not though as the bearings run silky smooth and they work fine in other frames!

Lol, keep it up then!

That really has to be it, then.

A decent LBS should have the kit to do it, or you could box it up and send it to Tarty.

Chris King?

Probably, as Adam said, the head tube could do with facing, these headsets are very precision machined so any discrepancy will be exaggerated, I would think.

Again, I could be talking triffletriff and scifflescuff, because, as is apparent, I roll on dubz and my brain melted last week.
