MadManMike
I guess I'm an "ex" DJ now I don't play anymore, but until NYE I had been playing for 10 years... I miss it, but can't afford the gear - a decent setup is £1,500 at least

Yup, all the lights etc still work, but one is missing the plastic trim on top of the "on" knob and that's it! They were on ebay and i just put a cheeky bid in and won them. Max Quinn
That's sick mate! I paid £350 for mine, but they were in top notch nick, with nice flight cases and Ortofons. Have you checked the pitches against the little pitch guide thing? They're normally the first things to go on Technics. Mind you, for that price I'd put up with dodgy pitches. defo think dubstep is pants, your probs gona laugh at me now,, lol i like to mix old skool hardcore and old skool trance... cant beat a bit of old skool I hate dubstep too, but choose to replace it with good music
King C
Do you mean checking against dots on the platter? They are in really good nick, and came with lids but nothing else so I put my old stanton needles on. I try and mix liquidy dnb and have a bit of a mash at dubstep aswell. Go on, hate me now I've been trying to record a mix for a while but the sound card on my laptop is really crap. Been meaning to get an external one for a while now. Max Quinn
Do you mean checking against dots on the platter? Yer. And also checking the pitches hold. If the pitches are out it's not such a biggie for that price, but it'll reeaallly mess up mixing if the pitches actually waver without you moving them if you get me? But yeah, I'm sure they're absolutely fine, I'm just jealous
monty madness
do any of yous actualy use the dots on the platter to calculate how much pitch to adjust? ive never used them, the only time i touch them is when slowing down the record for fine adjustment, everything by ear with me. was gona upload a mix i did but youd probs laff at my hardcore lol
Max Quinn
Nah I don't, I always thought they were purely for actually setting up your pitches? To use the dots you'd need to know the exact bpms of all your records, and if you learn like that then when you come to play a b2b set the other guy isn't gonna know the bpm of his record and you'll be royally f**ked in a club. They are used to calculate how much pitch to adjust whilst mixing but i dont no 1 person that uses them and i no a fair few Dj`s.. i only ever use them to slow the record.. anyways i dont think they should be used i think the trick is to train your ears to listen to 2 different tracks at the same time and be able to tell which 1 is faster than the other, once youv mastered that and getting to no your barrs and when to drop mixes ect theres no stopping you.. easy as pie lol
Max Quinn
Yer exactly. But that's what I'm saying if you used those things then you'd have to know the exact bpms of every one of your tracks, otherwise there's no way you could use them. I guarantee no dj in d&b uses them. Edited August 13, 2010 by Max Quinn

weirdoku
Need some help. Me and a friend are planning to get a pair of decks to start playing around with. But neither of us know anything about them or which ones to get. We have a budget of about £200-£250. I've had a quick look on google, apparently direct drives are better for scratching and technics are good. Anyone got any suggestions for which ones to get??
MadManMike
I had some fairly good Vestax direct drives, but yeah Technics 1210's are the best way to go if you can stretch to it. You'll be looking at £300-400 for a good pair.
Max Quinn
If you can't stretch to Technics I'd recommend Stanton T60s (or whatever the equivalent is now) for around £200. I got to a stage where I was playing out in clubs using them, and to be honest wouldn't have been bothered about upgrading if it wasn't for the fact that Technics are better for scratching (are you planning on scratching in the near future? Most DJs other than hip hop DJs don't) and all the clubs had Technics so it was easier to be used to the same system.
